Have you thoughts if fires are as common in Sept/Oct ? I'm sure television coverage and the advice of the locals will help guide for safety. Thank you again. Fires are common when the weather is hot and dry.
Last year people died in fires in June and October.
This year we are having big fires in August because of the recent heat wave.
It really depends on the weather.

I've never understood the pilgrims who smoke as they walk and there are many ! It simply makes no sense. Let's hope they are more cautious with their hot ash/discarded butts/matches than they are with their own health.

Thanks for the map @Rainerbernd, it help to put things in perspective, I have to say i'm a little bit nervous as I start my walk 10th September from Lisbon, the fires look a bit too close for comfort at various points along the trail. I hope more so for the local population than me that things turn around by then and the fires burn themselves out. I would appreciate any updates any one has. Worst case scenario I head over to Spain and do a different camino.

Currently there are no fires to worry about. Temperatures have decreased significantly and the fires that were active have already been extinguished.

It's not about smoking as such. I do sometimes smoke on flat sections. But what you do with the cigarette's butt that's another thing and obviously a problem. I put it out with my boots and put it in little pocket of my shorts. When I come to the first trash bin I empty my pocket. No trash, no fires. Simple. You just have to be aware of it.

Temps may have decreased, but between Santarém and Golega today it was scorching. The sun was burning - 4 lots of sunscreen stops - with all the sweat it made not much difference.

Hopefully it cools of a bit before I get started
