Getting from Pamplona to SJPDP

Hello! Thanks for all the advice allowing me to choose between the 3 ways to get to SJPDP from the US. I have tentatively decided on taking the train from Madrid to Pamplona, but R2Rio shows driving as the only option from Pamplona to SJPDP at the time of day that the train arrives.

Is there anything like an Uber or Lyft that we (my wife and I) could take? I’m weighing that against spending the night in Pamplona and taking the bus the next day. Any suggestions?

You can take a taxi.

Hey Barry I just did this a week ago. The taxi driver out front of the airport charged me 110 euros from the airport to SJPDP. He is an honest guy. He was friendly but be aware all the cab drivers drive very fast. He took me right to the hotel helped us with our bags and was honest.

And you can see if your hotel will provide transport. I booked our hotel through booking.com and transportation from the airport was an option. The hotel was wonderful and the people that ran it were fantastic. They even had a moderately stocked kitchen in case you’re too tired or overwhelmed to go out. SJPdP is wonderful. Stay an extra day if you can.

In front of what airport? OP said he was taking a train from Madrid to Pamplona.

Think about staying overnight in Pamplona. You’ll be pretty wasted after a flight and a train journey, and the bus next day to Saint Jean will be a lot cheaper. There’s also a good chance of meeting fellow pilgrims. Don’t push yourself before you even start walking.

Yeah, I think you’re right. I remember I stayed in a huge (100 bed) albergue in Pamplona on my first Camino. Very cheap. And Pamplona is a very cool city. I remember, in the evening, people gathering in the streets talking and the sound of all that gentle chatter resounding back off the buildings. Truly magical.

I am flying from Canada to Madrid, train to Pamplona and bus or taxi to SJPP which I was going to do all in one day. But decided to take the advice of the veteran Pilgrims on this forum and spend the night in Pamplona and head to SJPP the next day. Buen Camino.

Does anyone know how far the bus stop in Pamplona is from the Jesus and Maria Albergue? Also, what is the closing time for the Albergue?

I put my thumb out and within 15 min had a ride to SJPP . It’s the only thing going from there. Straight shot, about an hour

On my first camino, I flew to Madrid, took train to Pamplona on arrival, overnight at Aloha Hostel, and bus the next day to SJPdP. Bonus is you can leave any extra items at the hostel in Pamplona for the first few days from SJPdP back to Pamplona. The Aloha Hostel is close to the bus station and a great place to stay.

Yes, I would, but my wife doesn't feel comfortable. Did you feel safe? I think I would like that, because I can practice my Spanish.

I was with my son and with the pack and i gard was obvious we were pilgrims ready to start. They were young couple going to see SJPP as tourists, felt safe and friendly

It’s tricky, as I could pretty easily get to Pamplona from Madrid, but as my train would arrive arrive 1300 on 27 May I am anxious I will not find l affordable onward travel. Has me opting to fly into San Sebastián, then get the bus, then two trains as I at least know they’re running. Am I missing something?
