Getting from Santiago to Madrid

I was curious about getting from Santiago to Madrid after my Camino as I am flying out of there to Munich. I am planning on spending additional time after reaching Santiago, but I believe I read that if you complete the Camino, it is possible to get a little discount on travel. Any hints or suggestions?

Ryanair is not expensive if you avoid their aggressive add ons. Make sure your backpack fits as carry on suitcase.

Don't know about any discounts, but I do recall hearing that myself. There is an overnight train from Santiago to Madrid that has sleeping berths.

There are several ways to get to Madrid from Santiago.

Air - the cheapest flights will be Ryan-air. That said, you have to follow all their rules or costs will add up quickly. (Approx. 50+ euro's)

Train - The Alvia train is around 5 +hours (30+ euro's approx.)
The Tren Hotel overnight train is 9 hours - you have several options on this train.
A regular seat, (30-60 euro's)
Share a bed compartment with three others of same sex. (49 euro's approx.) (TD price)
Share a compartment with one other person (150 approx.)
Private compartment (180 approx.)
Obviously cost will vary depending on choice.

I have taken the train and Trenhotel. My decision was based on my Madrid flight departure. I had an 11:00am departure and the train arrives Chamartin station at 8:00am. There is also a discount if you are 60 or older. You must purchase a Tarjeta Dorada pass for 6 euro's but savings are 30-40%.

Bus - I have never taken the bus but it is an option.

Hi,

Is it best to book the Train (Santiago - Madrid) well in advance?? Not the overnight journey.

I start the Camino tomorrow from SJPDP and was wondering if I need to be concerned about travel out of Santiago now.....if not, can i just show up on the day and get on the Train to Madrid? - looking to travel on or around the 22nd of July.

On the RENFE.com schedule are listed two fast trains (Alvia) and one slow train plus the night train from SdC to Madrid each day. Surely you might be able to wait until closer to SdC to book your return train when you have a more exact idea of when you will arrive in SdC and when you would want to leave for Madrid.

We took the train from Santiago to Madrid after walking the via de la plata. It was a goof opportunity to revisit some of the countryside we had just passed through days before. Highly recommend the train.

See the link upper right corner where it says -welcome-.

A lot of the website is Spanish only. There is enough translated to figure out train schedules and reserve a seat.

Hi, Jack,
There are several good online "tutorials" to the frustrating RENFE system. They explain all of the different fares, classes, etc. One difference between turista and preferente (there may be others) is that tourist seats are four across (two and two) and preferente are bigger, only three across the aisle (two and one).

My Spanish is limited ... here goes

tarifa 4 mesas - is a group offering

Promo - 70% discount - no cancellation - no exchange - no choice of seats

promo+ - 65% discount - 30% fee for cancellation - 20% for exchange - miss the train by less than 30 minutes and you pay 20% for another ticket plus price differential

Flexible - 5% fee for cancellation - no fee for exchange except difference for a higher cost ticket - miss the train by less than 30 minutes and you get another ticket for no cost plus price difference.

Turista and Preferente is like the difference between economy and business class. Preferente is more spacious and has more comfortable seats.

I checked Ryanair for Santiago to Madrid pricing about 5 months in advance of my expected October departure from SDC.
20 Euros.
Like most? other discount carriers the earlier you book the cheaper it is.
