HELP! Amsterdam to St. Jean Pied de Port

Hello,
I am trying desperately to find GPS coordinates from Amsterdam to St. Jean Pied de Port. I am no orienteer and am not going to pretend to be a skilled map reader. What I am doing is trying to raise money to help people suffering from cancer by raising funds through long distance walking. There seems to be zero coherent information out there about walking from Amsterdam to the Camino Frances. Can anyone help with GPS possibilities?

Hi Marco, and welcome to the forum. I walked from Breda to Santiago, and relied on the guides from the Dutch Society of St. Jacob (Nederlands Genootschap Sint Jacob).

But they also offer help with those of us who are more directionally challenged. Check this link for further info (in Dutch).

Personally, and yes I have done long distance pilgrimages ;-), I just forget about GPS and work like this:

Where do I live?
Where is the closest Camino (yes, they do exist all over Europe and are way marked outside Spain/Portugal).
How do I get to that 'entry point' on the Camino network from where I am via local hiking paths.

It seems this won't be an option unfortunately as there is no real coherent information available on the route. Anything that exists is only in Dutch and only dumps you out at the edge of the Ardennes with no further route.

I got on the train and went in person to the Nederlands Genootschap Sint Jacob (because the woman answering the phone said no-one would help me by phone) and when I was there they basically said, Wow, great idea. We have no way to help you plan the route and no advice but buen camino. They did however tell me that the routes from Amsterdam toward spain are unmarked.

As I only have about a year to live, taking my time to plan a walk that should already have a pretty clearly existing route but does not isn't really of any interest.

Unless there are solid GPS coordinates this is not an option unfortunately.

Another idea, try contacting @simonea here on the forum, she is from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and has walked from the Netherlands to Santiago with a friend. Buen Camino, will write again if I digg more info out. SY

Ok, seems the closest "entry point" to Amsterdam into the wider Camino network is Nimwegen, here is what I found (sorry, the pages are all in German, but there are some GPS tracks available:

Nimwegen > Lüttich http://www.jakobswege-europa.de/wege/nordrhein.htm Download link for GPS tracks under the map.

Lüttich > Metz > Vezelay http://www.jakobswege-europa.de/wege/luettich-metz-burgund.htm

Alternatively you can go from Metz to Le Puy.

From Vezelay/Le Puy on the way marking and pilgrim infrastructure should be good enough to make it easy to find the way to SJPdP.

A few years ago...well a lot really, when I lived in Eindhoven I was signs for the Camino in Achelse Kluis, which is just inside Belgium near to Eindhoven. So I have done some digging. Here are three routes which start in The Netherlands and found this.

This is all the information you should need Marco. I have done the first part of the Pelgrimsweg from Amsterdam and the signage is good. I did carry a guide but only used it to see if there were any cafes along the route.
I find it quite bizarre that the Dutch Genootschap couldn't help you.
There is also a Dutch Camino Facebook closed groep (Camino de Santiago - ngsj) where you can ask specific questions. Most are very helpful and there are many participants who have walked from The Netherlands.

I have seen parts of the countryside from Amsterdam through Belgium and into the start of the Vezelay route. I would liken that countryside as being, relative to mine (I live at nearly 100 metres above sea level and less than 2 km from sea level), billiard table flat. Accordingly, you may care to consider biking the first several hundred km.

A support team could help with the transition from biking to walking, in particular the changes of some of your clothing and equipment.

Sorry for the 'not so positive' experience you had in the office off the dutch confranity (NGSJ).
Two years ago I did walk from Amsterdam to SdC, all on GPS routes which I found at the site of NGSJ. Together with maps.me it worked out perfect for me, I didn't need any other map. In these files you get al the caminoroutes in the different country so you can switch camino very easy while you go, if you want.

At this moment the NGSJ is working on making the information available also in English, but it is not there yet....
