I'd be more worried about dringing systems, because it has much more material to pollute.
The high amount of chlorus in spanish tap water will kill most bacteria.

Nice article @davebugg .
Even though we use 'single use' store bottles, we rinse these every time we refill them.
I've never really though of carrying a 'water bottle' as such.
The store bottles are so light!

And before I get 'ambushed' for not being concerned for the environment, we reuse the bottles all the way....

I think it is the refillable use that is the operative point of what the article addresses, rather than the original purpose of that bottle. It sounds like you are dealing with it, regardless

I agree. Sorry if my point was not clear.

I've been mulling the issue of reusable bottles vs single use store bought bottles for the Camino for some time. I do use reusable bottles at home and I do have a great concern for the environment, but knowing only too well that reusable bottles and their contents can so easily become contaminated, I'm leaning toward store bought bottles while walking. I've trialled all sorts of bottles, and drinking systems, but it all comes back to how easily can I clean this system/bottle on a regular basis, without the need to carry brushes and or cleaning solutions. I learned some years ago when working, that water bottles need to be cleaned often. I used to have a 1l bottle that I kept at work for water throughout the day. Each morning I would top it up and it could be weeks between washes (me very red faced). Until one day I detected a foul smell every time I'd take a drink from my bottle. About half way through the day I just had to find the source of the smell; and yes! it was coming from the lid and the mouth of the bottle, there was even a scum build up in the thread of the screw top! Yuck! I'm very diligent now keeping my bottles clean!

The issue of water bottles is rather like, boots v shoes, poles or no poles.......... and is further complicated by the bottle v bladder debate

So many personal experiences and preferences...........

We use store bought 'disposable' bottles but re use them. This is the system we use.
I carry some denture cleaning tablets and soak the tubes about 1 / week.
I may carry a tube brush next time. The tubes are in the sun and can get a bit of mould inside.
The brush weighs nothing really.
The bottles get rinsed at every refill.

Not exactly a fashion statement I know.

The Great Bottles v Bladder Debate

Caminos 1 and 2 we used bladders. # 3 we used this setup. This is waaaay more convenient...

I carry some denture cleaning tablets and soak the tubes about 1 / week.

Great idea to use denture cleaning tabs, I carry them anyway for my retainer. I can scrub the cap with my toothbrush, it's easy enough to clean.
