Leon to Bilbao

We have looked at the options of travelling from Leon to Bilbao by bus and train.
There seems to be a very limited service. We have to get to Bilbao to fly home.
Has anyone experience of this route and any advice as to which is best ?

Hi, bryans!

I haven't travel on this route, but it doesn't seem to me that there are very limited or few service. Four trains and buses leaves from Leon to Burgos each day and from there to Bilbao you have three trains and nine buses...

Maybe you could check the connections via Oviedo or Santander, but Leon - Burgos - Bilbao seems he best option to me. If you have limited access to the internet I can search connections for you.

Wish you safe return home!

bryans,

There is a daily RENFE train ( ARCO 00280 ) from Leon to Bilbao-Abando at 15:25 arriving 20:03. Price 30.80 euros. See >> http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/ for more information and to book tickets.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

The problem is there is not much direct service between Leon and Bilbao.

I would try Renfe from Leon to Miranda de Ebro and transfer to another train to Bilbao. The Renfe site does not always work well when a transfer is involved.

Miranda de Ebro

Northern route map for Renfe. I do not know why the route from Miranda de Ebro to Bilbao does not show; it does on a less easy to read map on wikipedia.

Bus from Leon will require that you go through major centers such as Burgos and perhaps even Logrono before getting a bus to Bilbao. The best way to do it is find the website for the estacion de autobuses and see where the buses run.

Bus station Logroño

I haven't found links for bus stations in Leon or Burgos yet. Alsa is a good resource for these locations but does not have all bus information as many companies are not part of ALSA network.

There is a narrow gauge FEVE train that runs direct from Leon to Bilbao once per day 1350 - 2130 (7.5 hrs). So from Renfe website:

Renfe website:
http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html

Press the FEVE button
http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/feve/index.html

Press Horarios and enter stations with dates.

Thanks for the help.
We can find good bus connections from Burgos to Bilbao.
We are only walking as far as Mansilla and are finding it hard to get a bus from Mansilla to Burgos.
We would prefer not to go to Leon if at all possible.
