LePuy Route and Sleeping Bag in Gîte

I am planning to walk from Le Puy-en-Velay to SJPdP and then continue to Lourdes this April. I have never stayed in gîtes before and am wondering if they are like albergues where everyone is expected to bring own sleeping bag.

In France, you must bring a liner bag or rent sheets, at a minimum. Almost always (I would go ahead with "always" except there's always an exception someplace) there are blankets available at the gite.

That being said, April will still be quite cool, and I think you would be more consistently comfortable in a one-pound (half-kilo) lightweight down bag of your own.

Thank you. I will bring my down sleeping bag. I hope that's enough. I do not know exactly what a "liner bag" is.

A liner bag is essentially an overgrown pillow case. They were originally designed to be used as a liner, inside a standard sleeping bag, to improve warmth or to keep it cleaner. Typically made from some lightweight fabric such as silk, cotton muslin, or Coolmax synthetic. Nowadays, with the increased popularity of hostels (not just for pilgrims), a substitute for sheets is necessary. And a liner bag proved to be just the thing. Prices run anywhere from USD 15-50 depending on fabric and fanciness.

Hi
Our experience on the Le Puy route was that all the places we stayed provided blankets; gites are generally better equiped than albergues. I love the Sea to Summit silk sleeping bag liner with what's called the "mummy shape" as it allows you to have the silk over the pillow so you head does not come into contact with the pillow case.

Or you can make one. I bought the right amount of meters of fabric, sewed up the sides, and voila, a sheet sleeping bag. For a few pennies. Not everything needed on the Camino needs to be a 'brand' or costly. A little old fashioned do it yourself works, and of course is also good preparation for the Camino. (and life.)

A liner bag is a thin sleeping bag made from silk, cotton or lightweight thermal material. You can use it inside a sleeping bag or as a sheet alternative.
