September 11 is going to be a special day for pilgrims, past present and future, and for all persons interested in learning more about the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
There is no registration fee for the session, but attendees are encouraged to bring a contribution for the noon hour pilgrim lunch. For example, Bruce Judah will prepare pulpo gallego or lentil soup. Dale Calder will bring his famous rustic bread and Tarta de Santiago. Barb Pelger is preparing a classic ensalada mixta. All and any contributions will be welcome!
Janice Ryan, Bruce Judah and I are pleased to announce that our special guest at the Fall Gathering of Pilgrims will be Gillian Thompson, Professor Emeritus of History, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. Dr. Thompson is a distinguished social historian of early modern Europe with a special interest in early modern France. She first became interested in the pilgrimage to Santiago while a student in France, when she regularly walked near a meeting place for piIgrims in medieval Paris. Her interest was further piqued when she encountered Erasmus's 16th century condemnation of pilgrimage. Dr. Thompson's presentation will be enriched with slides, maps and lively interaction with the group as she places the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in proper historical perspective. Prof. Thompson's recent presentation to the Victoria Chapter of the Canadian Company of Pilgrims was uniformly praised by participants and both novice and seasoned pilgrims reported gaining invaluable information at the session.
We are equally delighted to welcome chapter member and veteran pilgrim Dale Calder of Grand Manan, NB to speak at the gathering about his spring 2010 foray on the Via Podiensis the well-travelled portion of the Camino (or Chemin de St. Jacques), the French portion of the Camino Frances that runs from Le Puy-en-Velay to St. Jean Pied de Port. Dale was there to experience the coldest and snowiest spring in several decades!
Let me know if you plan to attend as soon as possible, and no later than August 30.
Ultreya! and Buen Camino to all.
Kevin McKinney, Coordinator
