After a series of very violent storms recently we found ourselves totally cut off from the outside world for nearly two weeks, no phone, no mobile, no broadband, and it surprised me how much we have become dependant on modern communications. I could no longer get my daily "forum fix" nor could we talk to friends or family, no internet banking or checking facts on Google to settle arguments, (my wife is always right). Well the broadband came back this morning and with it a ton of emails, most of them rubbish, my banking was in a mess but now sorted and I can now get my daily "forum fix" again. Hello to you all again and Buen Camino.

Welcome back, Wayfarer.
Sorry you were incomunicado with the repeated storms--hope you haven't had flood damage as well. We were far luckier on the East coast (and on a hill!). Arguments, and all fact-finding queries, last so much longer without Google, don't they--and you couldn't even 'ask a friend'.
Slán libh.

I hate to admit it, but I frequently find that my entire life is tethered to the Internet. Being cut off is a nightmare for me.

That said, I equally have to admit that every time I've been cut off for any length of time (ie long enough to get over my initial annoyance), I really, really enjoy the 'downtime'. Maybe deep down I am a secret Luddite! :)

Wayfarer - did the storms cause any problems for you other than going incommunicado?

Not really thank God, a few trees down here and there. We were very lucky in comparison to other parts even though we recorded the highest gust velocity in our area, 160 kph.

Pat, fáilte ar ais arís. As you know I’m in the outskirts of your county town, no power for two days last week, but mobile and mobile broadband working, back to my camping days with my gas stove, making porridge at 06.30 in the dark with the help of my (camino) head torch, lucky to have both to hand. The number of trees knocked by the storm last week was unprecedented, caused havoc throughout the county. In hindsight my troubles were insignificant compare to others.
Slán.
Buen Camino.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.
