Time of past OR future Camino
August to September (2013)
I'm planning on flying from NYC august 7, 2013 to Bilbao to SJPP and leave from Santiago to Bilbao and fly back to NYC September 15, 2013. Has anyone tried this? How do I get from Bilbao to SJPP and from Santiago to SJPP?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Happy planning and Buen Camino,

I have traveled from San Sebastian to Bayonne you need to change trains at the French border Hendaye but its waiting for you there then a bus to SJPP, sounds difficult actually very easy takes an hour from San Sebastian until Bayonne and its probably the same train. Remeber, St Jean is not exactly a thriving center of commerce and transportation, its a small village which receives many visitors every day, visitors who quickly pack up and leave. Not too many options. In Bilbao do take an hour to go see the Guggenheim Museum, built by Frank Gerry, don't have to go in just see the place from the outside, its mind blowing.

Similar situation for me, I'm leaving from NYC to Bilbao in July (seems to be the cheapest US flights to northern Spain). I'm going to start my walking though from Leon. What's the easiest and/or the cheapest way to get there from Bilbao? Also, in case I decide to spend a day or so in Bilbao before I leave, what're some cool things to see and do?

Can I stay in an alburge in Bilbao if I'm walking from Leon and haven't officially started my walk yet?

Check around some and use diffrent airports. Using my companies travel system I found:

Aug 7th JFK - Madrid - Pamplona (Depart 6:55PM Arive Pamplona 4PM
American Flight #94 & Iberia #5419

Sept 15 Santaigo - Paris-JFK
(Depart 12:15PM Arive JFK 5:10PM)
Iberia Flight #5795 & Iberia Flight #4231

Round Trip Economy $1,310

Airport code for Pamplona is PNA
Airport code for Santiago is SCQ

MagnoMurmure,

THE cool thing to do in Bilbao is to visit the extraordinary Guggenheim Museum designed by American architect Frank Gerry. For more info see >> http://www.guggenheim-bilbao.es

To travel to Leon by train the route is Bilbao-Abando to Miranda de Ebro changing trains to continue to Leon. For schedules see this Spanish rr site >> http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/. Estimated cost would be 30 euros and total travel time roughly 6 hours.

To travel to Leon by bus the route is Bilbao to Burgos changing buses to continue to Leon. Estimated cost is 30 euros and total travel time 4 hours. For schedules see >> http://www.alsa.es

You should be able to stay at an albergue in Bilbao as long as you have a Pilgrim Credential. See this Eroski site for a list of Bilbao albergues. >> http://caminodesantiago.consumer.es./et ... a-a-bilbao

Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Nice, I'll definitely check out the Guggenheim now; looks amazing. Looks like the bus option via Burgos is the best option for me then. Thanks for the advice!

I finally got my plane tickets! Yay. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm flying from NY :

Arrive Bilbao 9:05
Bus leaves from Bilbao 11:00am
Arrive in Bayonne 2:00pm
Take train to sjpdp around 6pm
Arrive in sjpdp around 7pm
Return itinerary:
Fly from Santiago 12:15pm
Arrive paris CDG 2:10 pm

I don't mind 4 hour stop in Bayonne coz I have errands to do. Im buying Paries chocolates for my husband and mailing it in sjpdp to new York.
