Forever Pilgrim
Time of past OR future Camino
2009-2022: CFx6, CP, VdlPx2, Mozarabe, more later.
Time to leave the Forum and getting myself a life: I am too addicted in here and need some air.

All right: So, first I need to go as a skipper (yes, I am) up here in the Arctic ( http://havcruise.no/) with some sports fishermen within 2 weeks, spending 5 fun days at sea, but after that, the Camino awaits me. I cannot resist. The calling is too strong, so I surrender, once more.

So, tonight I booked a plane from Arctic Norway to Oslo, another plane from Oslo to Madrid, a hostel in Burgos after a train ride of 2.5 hours from Madrid, and getting out on the Way on Sept.2. No procastination; just Easy. Total price: Arctic Norway-Oslo: 90 Euros. Oslo-Madrid: 80 Euros. All with www.norwegian.no . Train Madrid-Burgos: 36 Euros. Hostal in Burgos (arriving in the evening; albergue certainly full at 19.00): 36 Euros. Total travel cost to the Camino: 200 Euros + 36 more for a quiet bed before I get on with it.

So in total, for max. 250 Euros (wine, food, along) I am back on the Camino. How cool is that. Thank you, higher powers. I need to sleep in the airport in Oslo before going to Madrid, during the night, but I don't care: I am on my Way and I can take anything thrown at me as long as I end up on the Camino, walking.

Edit: By writing this, I realize how much many good people from much farther away have to pay to reach the Camino; My feelings are with you, because I am convinced you are as crazy as I am, but may have more restraints, economically/time, to enjoy the life on the Camino.

I am aware that I am lucky, being "close" to the Camino (Europe). However, I am not that close: I have to cross almost all of Europe to get there: I am starting out from the Arctic: https://www.visittromso.no/en , and then I have to sleep in a chair at the airport of Oslo; my plane leaves at 7.15 for Gatwick, England, and then another plane for Madrid, then a train to Burgos. Oh well, I am a good sleeper; I will fare well.

You know, the Camino is very much like in the Hotel California song (And also this forum, methinks): "You can check out any time you like; but you can never leave." Suits me fine. I will be refreshing my Camino experiences one more time (for now). I need another fix. :)

Hope to see some of you good folks out there.

BTW: No return ticket (I am retired, thank God: The guy who invented work could not possibly have had much to do!).

I am done when I am done, and it won't be soon. I will smell the roses and absorb where I am and how lucky I am.

I may even do a Finisterre and/or Portuguise walk: Who knows. Don't care.

Buen Camino!:)

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Thank you! How many pilgrims haven't stood in front of the Cathedral crying, suddenly understanding that the Camino was their lifechanger. I hope many more will understand the power of the Camino. I for one will definitely smell the roses, and spend my time on reflections and thoughts, for this is what the Camino is for.

And; so many pilgrims set out for a walk, and so many pilgrims end up understanding what they have received. This is a good thing and a blessing, for them, and for the Camino.

Alex, I wish you all the best. If you find yourself in Santiago September 23-25th and wish to meet then send me an email at mjsavage@yahoo.com I expect to be there then from walking the Portuguese Coastal route with another forum member and would enjoy meeting you. I fly home from Santiago on the morning of September 26th. (I will not have phone service)

Buen Camino!

Alex, I always enjoy reading your posts. Your plans sound wonderful.

As I think of you taking that first step on this Camino I envision the entire host of past pilgrims rushing to walk anew the Way of St. James with you. May the wind always be at your back and the joy of the Camino always in your heart.

Ultreia, Ultreia, Ultreia,

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Hope you have a great Camino, Alex...!

But wait. You're Norwegian and starting in Burgos? Ummmm. Some unsolicited advice? Ditch that hotel booking in Burgos and get down to Santo Domingo de Silos instead. There's a bus leaving at 17.30, so after vespers and a good night's rest, you can begin your walk with the very special 3 day amble back via the Ebro and the St Olav.
If you haven't checked out Laurie's recent thread about this, and my earlier one you should:

Thank you all for good words! Everything taken in!

But wait. You're Norwegian and starting in Burgos?
Why?

I had to abort in May in Moratinos/Sahagun due to a woman who wanted me home after nearly 2 months away + some private affairs...:D So, going back to Burgos bc I enjoy the walk to Castrojeriz (The little shop near the plaza/municipal albergue sells the best walking socks ever, and I need 2 more pairs.). Then next day climb the Mule Killer hill and take on the Meseta for a good week and then straight to SdC, but no rush.:)

Again, thank you, all fellow pilgrims!

Edit: Robo; you still in here? Addict!;):)

Now you have me started: Thanks for those links! Must gather more info, but know I can lean on you, Laurie & Rebekah.

This will definitely be considered, and 75% sure! Thank you for those links: Doing 4-5 days detour seems like a very good idea, especially for a Norw. Found the website http://www.caminodesanolav.es/no/burgos/ + have bookmarked your links. Must also read up in here: https://caminodesantiago.me/community/forums/camino-san-olav-between-burgos-and-santo-domingo.173/

Thanks again!

Edit: For new pilgrims: This is an illustration of the saying: "The best plan is to not have a plan". If you prebook your stays, you miss the opportunity to make changes...

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Ditto Alex! This now happens to me every time I walk, taking many Forum buddies with me...

And to plant further seeds of inspiration, since you have the luxury of no fixed date of return, here's what I'm thinking for next time I'm able to walk in this area (an out-and-back figure-eight more or less centred on Covarrubias):
Day 1 Burgos to Modubar San Cibrian
Day 2 Modubar San Cibrian to Mambrillas
Day 3 Mambrillas to Covarrubias (Days 1, 2, & 3 0n the St. Olav)
Day 4 Covarrubias to Santo Domingo de Silos (on the Ruta de Lana),
Day 5 Santo Domingo de Silos to Mecerreyes (on the GR82 to Covarrubias then the Ruta de Lana)
Day 6 Mecerreyes to Burgos (on the Ruta de Lana)

It has the benefit of walking the St Olav in the intended direction, which may make the navigation marginally easier. (I see you've posted on another thread and will go reply there further...)

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
I will be driving through Burgos in October on my way to the Costa Blanca and will be stopping at El Cid's hotel right in front of the cathedral. Little did I think that as I walked past this place in May I would be staying in it 5 months later. Having done my Camino staying in Albergues and putting up with the snorers and farters I was slightly surprised to note that many of the reviews of the hotel were written by Pilgrims. No hardship for them!
Enjoy your Camino Alex. I too will be back for a second go at it next year. I've got the kit it would be a shame not to use it.

I bless your walk. And thanks for participating (unknowingly) in my walk to Covarubbias (San Olav), which has a special meaning for me as a Norw.

BTW: I thorougly enjoyed reading you wal on the Sureste. It will be one of my next walks! Lonely, long, but giving.

Right: I am taking your medicine, Viranani: I'll do that way. Will post more about it at the San Olav section. But: I need to preprare for Spain, and Norw. cod, prepared as Bacalao in Spain, is an important part of the menu. What better way of preparation than making a big caserole of the stuff this afternoon? Now I'm stuffed...

With enouch chili that your eyebrows get a bit wet...;)

For new pilgrims:

I read so many post from unsecure new pilgrims on this forum, and would like to assure you about a few points;

  • You are not alone. There are pilgrims all around, and most of them will do anything in their power to help you if problems arise. Think about it: do bad people set out on a pilgrimage?
  • Do not stress. You travel to your destination, and then you walk, eat and sleep. It is that easy.
  • Be prepared for change: Do not book days in advance: Yoiu may need a rest day or two (hurt feet etc.), or you may, as I have been here, attracted to some intermediate action. Look at Varivani's post about: Because of that I have slightly changed my plans.
  • Do not book a return ticket: You may want to stay longer, or, you may want to go home earlier, if the Camino doesn't suit you.
Just a few tips.

Great advice, except for the last point. Those of us who live outside of Europe may not be able to afford the considerable cost of two one way tickets.
