Ourense via Verin variant

Hi all, has anyone walked the Verin variant to Ourense? If so, what are the sights to see and accommodation stages? Thanks Sharon

@alansykes will be taking that variant as he merges from the Camino de Torres, I believe. He is posting as he goes so keep an eye out for him.

Last year I was in both Allariz and Verín (not walking, though). Neither one is a "must visit" place in my opinion (I know some folks really like Allariz a lot, though), and Verín has a nice parador a bit out of town with a view of the castle. Allariz is on a river, has some nice old parts. It is near the very interesting Santa Mariña das Aguas, with a romanesque basilica and an ancient monastery, but you need a guide to visit. Hi Laurie, Thanks for the info. I'll be walking the Via de la Plata for the 4th time starting early next April. I'm looking at different stages this time round. I am planning on 44 days to Santiago averaging about 25 - 30 km each day. The Verin variant looks good. I think I can download some GPS maps from wikiloc to guide me past A Gudina.

Take a look at the CPI (Portuguese Interior) which enters Spain at Verin and continues to Santiago on the Sanabres.

I have to say that my day between A Gudina and Verin was memorable but despite that it was a lovely walk and very pretty. You need to take a fair bit of water in summer as the first fountain was at least 14 km in by memory. The markings may be hard to find due to overgrowth in places. The albergue in Verin is nice though. I didn't continue that way but walked up to Laza up the valley which is also a lovely walk. More bars on that route too. The little town just south of Laza is lovely.

Thanks Donna. I normally carry 2lt when I walk this route. This will be my 4th time but I've never done the variant.
