I’ll be arriving at the Pamplona train station at 2130 (930PM) on April 6, 2022. Anybody have a recommendation for a nearby budget friendly hotel or Albergue that I could get that late?

It's hard to figure out online if something is easy to get to after a long day of tiring travel.

I start off in Cadiz earlier that day, and it was absolutely the earliest I could get there. Any other suggestions are appreciated but train tickets are already booked.

I saw some older threads, but the latest was a few years old, and I think the hotel landscape has changed a lot in the last couple years.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

I never stayed there but would try
Bearan bar & rooms, a few blocks away from station .

You could check Albergue Plaza Catedral. Not sure how late someone is there but they give you a code to come in after open hours. They are friendly and clean and comfortable. On Bookings... Buen camino

Two people to walk the Camino de Santiago in the spring of (2018)
We arrived at the Pamplona train station to start our Camino. It was a 'what do we do now' situation. We asked a couple of people and were told that we should wait at small bus stand right outside of the station in view of that station and a bus would take us into the center of Pamplona. We waited, the bus came, and we rode until we estimated a good point to get off. We walked around a bit and stumbled across a most excellent place to stay: Jesus y Maria albergue, just a few steps away from the trail. We are going to stay there again this April 16-17-18. Buen Camino!!

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I would avoid checking in late to a shared space, even if permitted. It's impossible to enter with absolute silence, and most people will be sleeping or trying to.

I am following this topic with interest because I also expect to arrive in Pamplona on a 9:30 pm train, and spend a day there to get organized and rested. I agree with @trecile that arriving late to a shared sleeping situation, probably 10 pm by the time I get there from the station, is not cool. Plus, after traveling for approximately 35 hours, I am going to want a relaxing morning.

Hostal Bearan looked promising, so I got out my trusty old (2014 edition) Lonely Planet guidebook, and there it is. Recommended as a good value back then, and prices are nearly the same. Sounds good to me. I did note that the location is in central Pamplona, a few blocks from the where the bus from the train station stops, not the actual station. However, a more central location works much better for us once we get there. Thanks to @mspath for the suggestion.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

It’s good you posted that lonely planet review. Whenever I hear hostal, since I’m from the US, I always think of shared dorms.

That sounds good. Tomorrow I’m going to look at all the options and see which one is best. I also posted the same question in a Facebook group and got a half a dozen replies there.

And I came to the same conclusion. I’ll just need a room of my own after traveling the whole day. And of course it could be potentially rude to check into a dorm at 11 o’clock. No matter how well organized or quiet you are you’re going to be rustling around for 20 or 30 minutes.

I ended up booking a room at Hostal Bearan. €40 on Booking.com, €42 on their own website. Mobile phone navigation map says it’s a 28 minute walk from the train station.

I found one hotel a little closer to the train station for a similar price and it looked newer and more modern. I thought it was the hotel Eslava, but links from my browser or Booking.com lead to Aldo Central Pamplona, So maybe it has changed owners.

With such a late arrival I’m hoping the bar in Bearan is open or I might find some open shops. I emailed them and I’m awaiting their reply, but in the meantime, Anybody know if Central Pamplona will be active at 11 o’clock on a Wednesday night? Otherwise I’ll pack some rations from Cadiz so I have something when I get there.

We are booked in at Bearan, too, but about a month behind you. I just took a look at the website, and they list their bar/restaurant hours as 8:00-23:00, so 11 pm. Things do stay open late in Spain. No days of the week are mentioned, so I’d assume that means every day, especially at a hotel. If not, in 2019 we stayed a few nights in that same neighborhood (hotel has since burned down), and I think you would find bars open until midnight or so.

We are definitely planning on taking a taxi from the station. Taxis are not expensive, and personally, I would be very cautious about walking around with my pack in an unfamiliar city that late. Exiting the station is very quick, a taxi will get us there in minutes, and I think it’s possible we could be seated in the dining room by 10 pm, and certainly by 11. If we aren’t too fried from our looooong trip to eat, that is. 🤪 The menu for the bar looked delicious. *drool*

Buen Camino to you, Stephan!

I arrived at the train station and was able to take a bus quite quickly into town. I took the L09, for €1,40 and you take that eight stops.

The L 16 or L 17 more direct, and you take those three stops.

I got all this information off a mobile navigation app.

These buses stop either right in front of the station or nearby. They all will take you down to the old city.

On the train up from Zaragoza, I sat next to a wonderful college student who had actually walked the Camino during the time of Covid, and she assured me that while it was quite safe to walk in to Pamplona from the train station at night, it was a little bit too long for a casual walk.

She thought that I would have no trouble getting a taxi at night, but in the morning or during the day it might be a different situation. She said there was no Uber or anything like that in Pamplona, and only about 10 cabs.

It was actually because of her that I ended up on the L-O-9 bus. She was taking it home and said she would just point out where I had to get off. As well as giving me the name of a favorite Albergue and a monastery that she thought I would enjoy because of a history of illuminated manuscripts.

Hostal Bearan was comfortable and modern, but the walls were quite thin and I could hear the TV blaring in the room next-door up until past midnight. If I hadn’t had a White Noise app on my phone that I cranked full volume, I probably wouldn’t have slept well.

You can check in at the restaurant bar up until 11 PM. They had emailed me a code if I arrived after hours to use on a keypad on the door.

Stephan the Painter,

Thanks for your update.
I am glad that you arrived safely in Pamplona. Sorry that you had a noisy neighbor but at least the White Noise was a good blocker. Looking forward to reading more of your posts as you go forward.

Carpe diem and Buen camino.

Good to know about Hostal Bearan and the thin walls. I've booked them for my group this year and have already paid. But it's a great location and the operators seem very nice, so I'm happy. I told my folks to bring earplugs... ::😁::
