Camino Del Norte (2018)
Hey everyone!

In July I intend to walk the Camino del Norte beginning around the 18th - 20th. This will be my first Camino and I chose the Northern Way because as I understand it, it's a "quieter" walk that hugs coastline for stretches and with less road walking than the Frances. Also with it being summer, I like the idea of being able to swim in the ocean on occasion.

To make a long and boring story short, I'd booked a three month trip to Europe with the intention of spending the majority of my time in Berlin. My share of the rent was to be very affordable for the duration of my stay and so I'd budgeted and saved accordingly. However a week or so ago, an unexpected change of heart forced me to have to quickly pivot, gather and refocus.

So now I'm going for a long walk.

A few questions though...

I will be walking with a full 55L backpack. Is this type of weight doable or foolish?

Will €1000 - €1200 be enough to cover expenses (for just the walk, not the entire three month trip), and if not, how much should I expect to spend?

Should I consider buying a light tent/matt as well as a sleeping bag liner to try save a few € here and there by sleeping outside on occasion?

Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum! Where from do you plan to start your long walk? Berlin? That kind of determines the answers to your questions ;-)

Budget: If you live frugally, you can do a Camino easily with 20 Euro (or less)/day as long as you avoid Switzerland with its high prices.

Tent etc. Really depends on where you walk, on the well known pilgrim ways in France/Spain/portugal not really necessary.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Hi, thank you!
No, not from Berlin, that was just where I'd planned on spending most of my time in Europe. I'm actually still in Australia. I fly from Melbourne to London on the 16th of July, I'll then make my way to Biarritz and start my walk in Irun.

The lighther your pack is, the more you will enjoy your walk. I always aim at my pack weighting ~7kg 9 kg maximum
You don't need much, specially walking in the summer. Clothes dry quickly and a sleeping linner would be enough at nights. No need for a tent while walking the camino's in Spain. Actually, camping is only allowed in camp grounds, which would be more expensive than staying at piligrim's hostals. Buen Camino. !!!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
