Description: The Camino de Santiago is a 750km pilgrimage to the bones of St. James the Greater, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims have been walking the route from St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France to Santiago for over 1,000 years. The route crosses from France to Spain over the Pyrenees, continues across the flat meseta in central northern Spain, and then across several verdant mountain ranges in Galicia. In 2011, 183,366 pilgrims (3,726 from the U.S.) arrived at the Pilgrim Office in Santiago , most of them on the Camino Frances. Nearly half the pilgrims were women. The pilgrimage recently has been the subject of a film starring Martin Sheen, "The Way," resulting in a 75% increase in the number of English-speaking pilgrims. Tom Hartman, Columbia, has walked the Camino Frances six times since 2006, the Camino Aragones, three pilgrimage routes in France that lead to the Camino Frances, & four pilgrimages in Spain that end in Santiago (Camino Portugues, Camino Ingles, Camino Sanabres, and Muxia-Fisterra-Santiago). He will emphasize planning, equipment, training, and life on "The Way," but expect inspiration from photos and pilgrim stories.
