Returning to Paris from Santiago de Compostela

I am walking the Camino in the summer (Camino Frances), I have plenty of time to walk. I booked my returning flight from Paris (I arrive in Paris and leave from Paris, to save money). I need help finding out how long it takes/and what is the easiest way (other than flying) to return to Paris from Santiago de Compostela. I would like to spend a day or two in Santiago before returning to Paris to catch my flight.

Since return into 'the real world' after walking the camino is always a shock a slow transport solution is to ride the daily RENFE train from Santiago to Irun/Hendaye connecting with a SNCF train to Paris. Booked from SdC a few days before desired departure that long train ride across Spain is truly a sentimental journey as it passes through much of the countryside recently walked on the CF. It leaves Santiago roughly 10 am each morning.

Another way is Renfe train to Barcelona, perhaps by way of Madrid. Then SNCF train from Barcelona to Paris. Time for travel on this route is approximately the same as time for travel via Irun. You can choose the one with the more convenient schedule.

Irun and Hendaye are on the France/Spain border near Bayonne. Almost nothing goes between the two countries across the Pyrenees, so trains go around them, either at the Barcelona end or the Irun end.

Thank you my friend for this kind information. I'm buying a return ticket to Paris from Johannesburg and that is the reason why I have to go back from santago baynooe\Biarritz and onward to Paris. Thanks for alerting me of this railway line from Santiago to France, I will investigate that. I was also maybe thinking fly to Madrid and cometo St pied by train andbusand taxi. But I would rather like to start on the French sidebecause iwant to spend a few days in Paris on my way coming back. Thank you very much for your the support

The 'fun' part of the crossing at Irun/Hendaye is that only some Renfe trains terminate in Hendaye while others terminate in Irun.

For some odd reason, SNCF TGV and Intercites trains all terminate in Irun but may not pick up passengers in Spain.

If your Renfe train terminates in Irun you will need to make your way the 3 km to Gare d'Hendaye.

Euskotren (aka Metro Donostealdea) operates commuter rail service connecting Irun Colon station to Hendaia station. Exit Irun Renfe station, turn right (North) then cross the bridge over the tracks to find Colon station on the North side of the street. Hendaia is co-located with Gare d'Hendaye. The trains run every 30 minutes.

You can walk the 3 km. It involves crossing Puente de Santiago. If you look left (West) you can see the runway for San Sebastian EAS airport across the river.

It might be helpful to do a map recce.

I know you mentioned not flying back to Paris, but... We did.
We needed to slowly adjust as well from our Camino in the summer of 2016. Flying back to Paris gave us that extra time in Santiago (it was cheap too). We stayed in a place called the "Youth Hippie Hostel" in Paris. Funny name, but great people staying there, lots of different stories were shared (including the Camino of course). It's a train ride and a walk to get there; might be worth consideration.

In 2013 I flew back to Paris CDG on Vueling. Make reservations early and you can save a lot of money.
Very easy to get to the Santiago airport by public bus, and only costs 3 euros.

I recently traveled from Barcelona to Toulouse (then to Lourdes) by train. It is not a re-adjustment that I would recommend!! Take your own food. The food on the train is nearly inedible (and expensive). If you are thinking about adding Lourdes to your return, expect the Toulouse to Lourdes trip to be like a local bus in India.

It seemed very nice to have my own room, bed, shower, and clean sheets after so many days walking. It was also a nice break before the long plane ride home the next day. We spent a few days in Santiago before heading to Paris, but after being gone for 55 days we were really ready to get home. It was a wonderful journey, but it was also wonderful to get home. While we were there last summer there were several "strikes" in various countries which changed many people's travel plans, so remaining calm and as flexible as possible is an important attribute.

Hello Camino family,
I wanted to thank you for all your valuable information. I was to walk the Camino in 2017, but life had different plans for me last summer. I will be starting the Camino the 28 of June 2018, and thanks to your input, I just booked my flight back to Paris from Santiago. Love the train... but 36 hours was a bit much... not to mention cost. Booking an early flight saved me money.
