Hello,
So in his latest vid Andrew Suzuki mentions that one has to make a reservation to stay at the refuge at Roncesvalles. I've made my reservation so I'm not worried about the epidermis in my nasal region, but is it actually compulsory to arrive with a booking or just advisable at peak times?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
You don't HAVE to make a reservation at Roncesvalles, but it might take a bit of stress out if you do. Or you could walk via Valcarlos and walk further to Burguette or so. But to make it very clear: The albergue is Roncesvalles is NOT reservation only (very, very few are)! Buen Camino, SY

Yes that's what I thought.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hello,

The problem with Roncesvalles is that it recently halved the number of beds available, from 400 or so to 183, to meet with municipal requirements. You can imagine that if this albergue used to work for 400 people, it may be a different situation now that it offers only half the beds.

At the moment the number of available beds in Roncesvalles is 259; 183 is the number of beds in new the restorated part of the building, then there are another 40 beds in the Sotano (basement) and another 36 beds in the 'winter-albergue'.
Unfortunately the Campamento (88 + 40 beds) cannot be used at the moment due to regulations of the gouvernment of Navarra.
Only a certain amount of the available beds will be kept for reservations, all the other beds are free for arriving pilgrims. So if you do not have a reservation be sure you arrive there before 5 PM, and you will certainly have a bed. If you are a fast walker this will not be a problem. If you are a slower walker take a reservation at Orrisson or Valcarlos, in order to arrive in time in Roncesvalles.

I actually just tried to make a reservation there and after the credit card transaction failed 3 times in a row for unknown reasons, I phoned and was told by the very nice gentleman that I shouldn't worry about a reservation given that they have 200 beds. :) First Camino lesson learned: don't worry, the Camino will provide.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
