When you first come into the industrial part of the town there’s a cafe about halfway along the route. Beside there is a sign suggesting you go through an underpass. This underpass is closed so you have to go up the hill and onto the main road turning to the left into the main town.

Be aware that the roads are very busy and you will have to keep to the left side until you cross the railway line again.

After that you go back into the countryside again.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc

Hi A,
Thanks for the update. I haven't checked that stage of the route yet (walkers may be directed elsewhere) but when you say the underpass is closed, is it inaccessible for those on foot too or just those on wheels (whatever the type)? 🙂

It is an underpass for the rail line there. The line looks closed so the access has a gate across it. To cross the rail line you have to go up to the road leading into the town itself.

The old sign directing people is still there beside the cafe.

Hope you got the marching band when you arrived in San Miniato

Arrived San Miniato (Alto) yesterday arvo but alas, no marching band...seems that honour is reserved for an exhalted few... 🚴‍♂️ 😄

Next Spring my wife and I are planning to walk the Via Francigena from Lucca to Rome. We plan to arrange our own accommodation. Can anyone advise if there are companies who do luggage transfers...
