Hello everyone, looking to see if anyone has recommendations for a rucksack that fits easyJet’s carryon size which is height max 45cm 35 cm width. I was looking at an Osprey 24L but it’s height says 49cm. How strict are the airports over a few cm? Thank you Lynn

EasyJet used to be fairly chilled; but no longer. If you’ve not paid for a ‘larger’ cabin bag (56/45/25) then your carry-on has to fit under the seat in front of you.

If the flight’s not full then in my experience you’ll be OK but if it’s near-full they’ll wheel out the measuring device and be very inflexible. Or put another way - you’ll get the service you’ve paid for.

Several years ago a fellow passenger was so incensed at his bag being declared oversized that he forced it into the measuring device. His triumph was short lived as he couldn’t get it back out and missed the flight. His mood wasn’t improved by the general hilarity which ensued.

Hi thank you for reply. The Osprey is fine width and diameter just 4 cm higher …. But non packed……. May have to pay more to save problem

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
Lots of backpacks will squish down smaller than the maximum size. As far as acceptable size - that's up to each airline, and they have sizing cages or boxes that your bag must fit into. If you live near the airport you could take your packed backpack to see if it fits into the sizer. However they don't always check. The lower cost airlines make quite a bit of their money from fees for extras like checked bags.

Yes it’s cheap flight then seating then baggage etc all add ons……. But still cheap really compared to train travel uk!

My first camino i used an Osprey Fairview 40L. Great pack/met carry on size requirements.

Thank you …. Still a little big for easyJet rules… supposed to be 45 cm height…. I’m beginning to think there aren’t any suitable rucksack that combine a good back support over long distances with a small size rucksack that fits easy jets height dimensions …. Hence why most people check in or go for the extra large carry on extra price to boost it to 56cm. I expect marketing team would have checked most available backpack heights to make the money!

The dimensions that you cite sounds like a bag that's meant to go under the seat in front of you. Very few backpacks that will work for the Camino would fit that space.

I've seen a similar scenario myself two times. I've also seen someone open their luggage on the floor in front of everyone before boarding and angrily try to redistribute it to no avail.

Last year i carried an Osprey Talon 33 on Easyjet on the way out and Ryanair homeward bound!
All straps as tight as i could get them the shoulder straps secured and tightened reversed!
I also had a lightweight Rab fleece on with pretty large side pockets; i carried my liquids and electricals in it for going through security and the flight!(just took it off and put on conveyer as is;meant not having to loosen pack to remove stuff )
Worked for me.
Best of luck

Overhead bin! with room to spare in the dimensions of the bin.
Like i said above it was cinched up like a mummy and i carried it by the top handle.
I know they have max sizes and Ryanair i think is the smallest!

I really tried to get my pack as short and thin as i could cos Ryanair has a 50 euro gate check charge so was very nervous
( i had made a bag measure out of three lengths of para cord L,W,D to fit Easyjet and on these i put 3 pieces of tape in the Ryanair smaller positions)

Anyway it worked however to my shock other backpackers got on;two had packs as they passed me that looked WAY bigger and fuller than mine and my pack i know was on their limit!!!!!
Perhaps staff were in a good mood?

My experience, with pretty much all airlines, is that if you are actually wearing the pack, they are unlikely to check. I flew with Easyjet a couple of weeks ago and they were quite thorough about checks, but as I was wearing my pack they didn't make me check it in the sizer. If it's obviously over they will still check, though.

I think Wizz air is the most strict. Ryanair are strict on paper, but they actually don't check as much as some.

I asked because some airlines have an extra charge for using the overhead bin, and only allow bags under the seat for no extra fee.

I just checked Easy Jet's site, and it says
Everyone can bring one small cabin bag per person on board for free. It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles or wheels) and needs to fit under the seat in front of you.

You can pay a fee to use the overhead bin. This is what I would do, especially since I like to use the space under the seat in from of me for my feet.

Ryanair are super strict now on measurements , so had to upgrade and book

Yeah on both flights i had the two bag option! But only took one;my pack.
Easyjet everyone has underseat option 45x36x20 cm!
But but booking an upfront or extra legroom seat you can take a large bag 56 x 45 x 25 cm for overhead bin.
Ryanair priority two cabin bag sizes
Underseat 40cm x 25cm x 20cm
Cabin Baggage priority 55cm x 40cm x 20cm

the 40x25x20 option is way small and I have spent too much time sorting out kit to check it, so felt it best to pay up, carry in and sort poles etc when I arrive

Hi Lynn,
Easyjet used to have a more generous size allowance for cabin baggage, but they can be quite strict about the measurements. There are very few useful rucksacks which meet the new criteria.
My work around, like others above (and I'm flying to Seville by Easyjet to start the Via de la Plata in two weeks) is to pay for an 'up front' seat with extra legroom which includes a larger cabin bag (56cm long), which your Osprey choice would certainly fit within. It added about £15 to my flight cost; annoying but, as you say, still so much more affordable than rail from the UK.
Buen Camino and happy planning and packing!

We've never had an issue if you cinch it down and it will fit in the overhead you shouldn't have any problem.

I finda my 35lt bag just perfect anything over that bit dodgy depends on airport staff being stroppy but not worth chancing anything 2 large

New packs are a buzz kill. I went to REI to consider a smaller pack...mine is an Osprey Aura 50 I bought in 2015. The length is 20 to 21 inches. The new backpacks, even 36 liters, are around 27-30 inches. Adding several inches to the length is weird.

We have Osprey 35L, we can safely take as hand luggage on both Ryanair and EasyJet, and that’s also with our walking poles inside, we are on Camino as we speak 😄👣

I am putting mine in the hold next week to Biarritz for the Frances and though I have a 10kg allowance it only be 6kg as I am taking my hiking poles they not allowed on the aircraft with me .. just incase yours won't be allowed for being oversized try squshing it down by 2inches if you have any room otherwise it be cheaper paying the extra rather than getting a new backpack

Yes, I definitely recommend actually measuring it once packed.

I think responders are missing the fact that many low-cost European airlines charge for overhead bin bags (what US carriers call “carry on”) and only allow a small purse/bag that fits under your seat as part of the lowest-priced ticket. My wife’s 28L backpack won’t even scrunch down that small! After multiple flights on multiple airlines over multiple years, I have found the checkers to be somewhat lenient on the extra-charge overhead bin bags and ZERO-lenient on the underseat bag.

Last time I took a backpack on the plane with me , at the departure gate I was asked to take everything out to see what was allowed and what was not but I suppose that is the UK for you that's why I thought putting it in the hold this time round .

Yes I checked Ryanair before booking my flight to see what their rules were which seem the same as EasyJet so it was cheaper for me to pay for it to be in the hold rather than in the overhead rack and they state hiking poles must go in the hold as they can be used as a weapon ,which is understandable .

Hello pepe 😊 didn’t realise it was you till I checked your name 😂 my question is how did you manage to bring your poles as carry on??

Yep, 100% the allowance is minuscule, so having to pay extra, but a least I know the bag will arrive at the same time as I do

Hey Jo, We just put them IN our backpacks. We have never had a problem taking them as carry on. We always have rubber ends on so no sharp points. This time round my pack was 6kg and Freddie’s 8kg, we paid for the Ryanair “package”: priority boarding/2 bags/reserved seats, we usually get a meal deal in one of the shops in the airport so that’s a 2nd bag for one of us. We’ve never had a problem going through security or getting on the plane. The poles actually make the bag a little longer than the frame but we have nothing in the bottom section or the ‘lid’ pockets for the flight to make it as unbulky as possible. After my Frances Camino I had a sore bottom and was able to walk on with them in my hands, I was asked if I needed them as a walking aid and said yes. 😄👣💞

I've carried on flights the largest a 48L and the smallest a 32L. None of them weighed more than 15 pounds. If it's too big to have as a carry on then you've probably got too big a pack for the Camino. If you throw it in the air above your head and it's too heavy for you to catch? You're probably carrying too much in it. If you cannot get up off the floor while wearing it and stand upright, and you wallow about on the deck like an upside down turtle? It's probably too heavy.
As far as trekking poles? It's a crapshoot. None of my flights allowed me to carry on trekking poles but there are other people who have. Who knows?

Hi, if you have to check your pack, what do you do about locking. ?
I put a rolltop liner inside my rucksack as a dry pack. But for flying, its big enough for the rucksack to fit into it. I use a security wire loop with a padlock which I fit through the clips on the rolltop.

But, I mostly pay to use the overhead bin for my 33l Osprey.

We just put them IN our backpacks.
Again, it works some times, in some places, for some. But as far as I know, hiking poles, whether they are extendable, collapsible, taken apart, wrapped in cling film, with or without a rubber tip at the time of boarding, are prohibited as hand luggage on European airlines. I have asked at Manchester, Liverpool, Oslo and Porto and it's the same - you are not allowed to take them in. The hand luggage bag goes through the X-ray and in most cases will be taken to one side and you will be told to check the poles in or have them confiscated. As mentioned, it depends on the person on the day, but the rules are clear. If you want to take that risk, fine, but for people planning to do the same, please check the hand luggage requirements, what size bag you have paid for, what you can and can't take on board, and plan accordingly. I wouldn't want that stress and spend that extra time and money when I could be relaxing before my flight.
I use Pacerpoles which I can't just pick up anywhere, so I used to send mine in the post from the UK, but after brexit the time, hassle and cost has doubled so I now prefer to take them with me. In my pack, which I check in. Before I used to be able to take my little Osprey Tempest 30 (old version, the new ones have a stiffer back) and I could fit it under the seat in front of me, so it can be done if the pack has a soft back.

To my understanding nowadays the lowcosters cheapest ticket virtually doesn't include any luggage. Adding the checked-in one may look relatively expensive, but it relieves you from all the concerns about the poles, knives etc.
I usually put my backpack in IKEA FRAKTA bag when checking in. Costs about 4€ and weights several hundred grams, but protects well and it is easy to spot it on the conveyer belt 🤓

Yes it’s cheap flight then seating then baggage etc all add ons……. But still cheap really compared to train travel uk!
Lol I have a senior railcard being that I am 62 this year but agree all the add ons is far cheaper then trains in the UK... in total I have paid £62 for the coach ticket to Stansted Airport, my flight , backpack in the hold , seat reservation and breakfast on the 7:00 flight next week to Biarritz..

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
I hear ya'...same dilema, or almost. the same...I have Osprey Eja 38 which I love but it's 73cm tall! So not sure wether to check it in with ryanair and risk not arriving with me to Porto or use smaller pack. I will carry around 5kg so all could potentialy fit in a smaller bag. I would either pay for the Orprey or get smaller bag - I would defo not risk the gate situation, but that's me - hate the fuss.

If your going with Ryanair then put it in the hold if you want to take your Osprey..I could not be bothered to change my backpack for Biarritz as it would cost more to buy another backpack and as you say you cannot risk turning up and expecting to take it on board with you

So I'm walking around the Albuquerque airport today and see this 🤔😁
My first reaction is "why is that bear wearing its pack upside down", my second was "he probably meant to go to the Albergue and ended up in Albuquerque by mistake" (bears not being known for their linguistic capabilities)

UK train prices are a farce - my daughter had to do an overnight trip to Manchester from London this week - outbound ticket £162, return ticket £68. The branch manager in Manchester asked why she hadn't opted for a one month valid "Anytime Return" so she could have stayed an extra day . . . because that would have been £369! For a round trip four hour train journey. Compare that with the 12 hour journey from SdC to Irún-Hendaya at the French border for just £58!
So a warning to visitors to this fair isle - be careful if you travel by train!

We took 36L ospreys carryon on air Canada and TAP air to Lisbon in 2017 and they fit in the upper cargo okay. The backpacks weren't super full so maybe that made a difference. I don't think they were measured at the gate. We went to the airport the day before to make sure.

I have flown Ryanair and Iberia express both with an Osprey 40l Farpoint, which is advertised as complying with the restrictions for cabin baggage. I've never measured it and never been asked. The fact it's on my back probably means it avoids scrutiny 😉

Me too, several times with no problem, 36L Osprey.
The issue that @Lynnhardy is facing is that her ticket does not allow access to the overhead bins. Any hand luggage must fit in the space under the seat in front of her. This is quite common on low cost airlines.

I was thinking of going two days earlier to spend sometime in Bayonne first rather than rush to SJPDP ...ryanair said just pay the difference..I checked their prices and having first priority boarding for an extra £22 I could take on board a 10kg bag for the overhead bin on top of the £9.99 ticket..however because I am taking my poles everything has to go in the hold so that rules out my idea ..

I discovered today, after much research, that I can fly Gatwick to Malaga on my intended dates for €1. DHL will ship my luggage for less than the airline! What could go wrong?

As I remember there’s way marked routes to Santiago- that’ll do me. Though this time I’m on a pilgrimage to Andalus. Granada, Antequera, Cordoba, Jerez, Sanlucar, Cadiz. No Orujo 🙁 but plenty Ciento Tres. We shall survive 😉

Hi, if you have to check your pack, what do you do about locking. ?
at any USA airport, locking is useless. If the lock is not "TSA-approved" then they will cut or break it. But TSA-approved means TSA at every airport has a master key—which means criminal can buy master keys cheap on the black market. A lock merely tells every one who sees it that there's something of value inside (even if there isn't).

Yes I was trying to go for the smaller under seat carry on bag. I’ve caved and paid for the second carry on now, my Osprey pack fits easily the size. Thank you

Size of bag is certainly an issue when considering whether to check or carry your backpack on the flight, but there is also the issue of whether the airline will allow trekking poles in the cabin. Does anyone know if there is a definitive airline policy / rule about trekking poles in carry-on luggage?
