Santiago to Barajas Transportation

Time of past OR future Camino
2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2024
I will need to go from Santiago to Barajas for my return flight. I've found only one post on this topic (dated 2011). I had used this post to plan my bus ride back to Barajas in 2012. The bus trip I took was fine. However, I'm leaning toward a flight this year as time might be an issue. Please share any information that you might have. What's the latest information on flights, train and bus? Thanks. I am leaving in a week. Buen camino. -Hieu

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Hi, hieudovan,

The trenhotel is a popular option, and prices on the RENFE website or with the tarjeta dorada card might be very cheap. It arrives around 8 am, I think, and you could buy your ticket when you arrive in Spain.

I have taken the train, but I have recently started flying, but it's cheap only because I do an "open jaw" ticket, and it adds very little to the price. So I assume it's too late for you to do that.

What time do you need to be at Barajas?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Thank you Wharinharangi and Peregrina. I'll look into the resources. I'll need to be at Barajas at noon on June 13.

I'm a worrier when it comes to travel, i.e., I don't want to miss my nonrefundable flight. In 2012 my bus arrived the night before my morning flight. I just wanted to make sure in case of unforeseen circumstances (accidents, delay/cancellation) I could still have a chance to make my flight.

In looking up the resources, I noticed that there's a 6 am flight by Iberia, arriving at 8 am. This is in plenty of time for my noon departure. I might get "adventurous" and book this flight.

Thanks again for being so helpful. This forum never ceases to amaze me. Within a few minutes, I already got 2 responses. Buen camino. -Hieu

Addendum - Peregrina, I checked out one of your links and found the solution that fits my situation perfectly:

"That leaves you with overnight bus, which arrives at T4 (the new Barajas terminal) at 7 am. Leaves Santiago at 9:30 pm and costs 47 euros."

I'll be taking this bus, having plenty of time to make my noon flight. Thanks again for taking the time. Buen camino. -Hieu

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Falcon have you done overnight busses in China? ;-)

Check RENFE site.
Trenhotel leaves Santiago 2233hrs on June 12th, arrives Madrid Chamartin 0802 June 13th. Short Cercanias ride to T4. 31.7 euros cama turista, "promo" fare.
Be a lot more comfortable than the bus, I'm sure.

That would also be my choice if I were going to go on either bus or train. I've not taken the bus from Satiago but I imagine it's not too comfortable. The train, especially with one of those little beds in a 4-person room, is really fine, and the Cercanias train to Barajas from the train station is very quick and efficient -- about 12 minutes I think. Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Thanks for all of your comments on my overnight bus plan. It would be foolhardy to not heed the advice of well travelled peregrinos. Looks like I'm in for a new experience. Trenhotel it is. Thanks to all for your helpful assistance. It's time to pack for my May 1 departure. Buen camino. -Hieu

TrenHotel is comfortable, and nice clean bed in 4 berth compartment. You may need your earplugs though, as the noise from the rails can be intrusive.....
This probably won't affect you, travelling into the morning (08oohrs), but when I did the Madrid - Ponferrada run, I was somewhat concerned that I might sleep through the stop (0445 hrs arrival), but I need not have worried, as the sleeping car attendant made sure I was awake. In fact I was the only one alighting at Ponferrada; it was somewhat dire at that time of morning...lol

We booked a flight with Iberia on 17 May. The duration is only 1:10. And they now allow 23 kg baggage. Like yourself we are also worriers when it comes to travel, so rather safe than sorry!! Have a good one!!
