I have an iPhone 13. I use an esim for my home account and a physical sim for travel. So far in Spain for 3 caminos have used Vodafone, just went into the shop and asked for a prepaid. Works perfectly, and very rare not to have good reception, either on Primitivo or Frances. Except one place but that’s a story in itself. 😀. Buen Camino, enjoy one of the most wonderful experiences there are.

One of my favorite things was to leave my smart phone at home and just travel with my small 7" tablet.

One of my goals was to be as unconnected as possible for my Camino. I didn't post to any social media, just a quick email home to let them know I was still breathing every few days. Otherwise it was off, no weather or world news checking or pre-booking rooms.Such a relief to be unconnected mostly.

At night in the albergue's I always thought it was sad that most people sat around glued to their smartphones, texting or posting pictures to various social media sites rather than visiting with people sitting right next to them.

Bottom line, no one cares about the pictures that you post. No one really understands what a Camino or pilgrimage walk is unless they have done one.

How good that this works for you.

A markedly different experience for me. I frequently post the day’s favorite pictures on WhatsApp for my spouse (who makes my walk possible), friends, co-workers, neighbors who have asked and a great thrill for my 97 y.o. Mother who vicariously comes along and thoroughly enjoys my journey. My most recent Camino, I used a SIM card for the first time. The enjoyment of calling home and Mom to see it in real time was an incredible moment. Four months later, they still savor it.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Check with your service provider as they may offer a travelling package whereby they charge you more per day abroad (connected) but your phone acts both as a local line, have access to internet and your phone still receives calls and can make calls as if you were still back at home.
