Hi folks,i'm booked to arrive SJPP 16th sept,had planned to walk the Camino in 4-5 weeks but 5 weeks ago was involved in a bad traffic accident which resulted in broken collar bone n 3 broken ribs.
I will however start in SJPP and get to Pamplona and fly back from there to London and go back next year and finish my journey.I'm 50 and fairly fit although the rucksac may cause me issues even though it will be light.How long should this journey take,planning one/two nights SJPP,one Orrisson,then Roscavelles and onto Pamplona.I know its how long is a piece of string but need to pre-book flight back etc,but in saying that i will not be in a hurry )

Re: SJPP-PAMPLONA.

Roncesvalles to Pamplona is two approximately-twenty kilometer days. You can break it into more, but only Zubiri and Larrasoana (and Arre, which is very close to Pamplona) have albergues; the rest are hoteles and pensiones.

Add that to your two days to Roncesvalles, and it is four to five days.

Here are some options for SJPP to Pamplona.

Three days walking:
SJPP to Roncesvalles (25 km)
Roncesvalles to Zubiri (22.6 km)
Zubiri to Pamplona (22.4 km)

Four days walking:
SJPP to Orisson (must book in advance) (8 km)
Orisson to Roncesvalles (17 km)
Roncesvalles to Zubiri or Larrasoana (22.6 or 27.6 km)
Z or L to Pamplona (22.4 km or 17.4 km)

Note: most people do this stage in four days, unless they become injured.

Five days walking:
SJPP to Orisson (8 km)
Orisson to Roncesvalles (17 km)
Roncesvalles to Vizkaretta (new albergue/pension Corazon Pura) (10 km)
Vizkaretta to Zabaldika (new albergue) (23 km)
Zabaldika to Pamplona (9 km)

There are also albergues in Trinidad de Arre and Villava, 5.4 and 4.6 away from Pamplona, respectively.

Since you're not dealing with jet-lag, I'd recommend just one night in SJPP, then walk to Orisson the next day after a leisurely morning in town. At the other end, Pamplona is worth at least an afternoon and an evening, to enjoy tapas, some sights, and the vibrancy of the city center. And you might also want some time with your new Camino friends!

There is a luggage transport service along this route, for 8 euros a stage. You could have your backpack sent ahead each morning, and then just carry a light day pack with your water, snacks, and extra layer of clothes. Your bag will then be waiting for you at your destination (you have to know where you're going to stop each day). Your hostel or pension host will show you how to prepare your backpack and will also be able to arrange the bag pick-up for you.

Duffs, under the circumstances, I imagine you will be wanting to get your luggage transported? Might help reduce the pain etc.

So make it seven and as Margaret says forward your pack daily. The idea is to have a wonderful time, so give yourself plenty of it.
