Start in Gibraltar?

Looking for any info that would help me decide just how feasible it would be to start the VDLP in Gibraltar. I see that the way is marked from Cadiz to Seville but how tough would it be to get from Gibraltar to Cadiz? I figure on breaking the VDLP into two segments due to length and time restrictions so increasing the length would not be a problem. I plan to start somewhere around the end of April before the days start getting too warm and I would like to see Gibraltar again. Any help comments appreciated.

There is an apparent route, at least from Algeciras; Camino de Santiago del Estrecho.

Algeciras - Tarifa - El Lentiscal - Tahivilla - Benalup-Casas-Viejas - Medina Sidonia - Puerto Real - Camino de Cadiz

We were thinking of this and spent a few hours zoomed in closely on googlemaps - there appear to be not-major roads you could take if you don't mind asphalt.

A word of caution here. Gibraltar may be outside the Schengen area and if you need a visa to visit the Schengen area you may need a multiple entry visa. For example you fly to Madrid (Schengen area) and travel to Gibraltar (non-Schengen) and then walk out (Schengen again.) I don't know the rules for sure but look into it if you think it may be a problem. Probably not a problem for Kiwis.

I'm planning to do the Via Serrana from Gibraltar/La Línea. It's 240-odd km to Seville, going past Jimena de la Frontera and Ronda. Apparently quite well marked. Sounds like a very tasty prelude to the Vía de la Plata.

I walked the Via Serrana from La Linea last year with my wife. No problem whatsoever with marking, lodging and so on.

The rules are dependent on your nationality.

A book 'A Walk from Gibraltar to La Corona including the Via de la Plata', author Christabel Watson, self published,64 pages. I obtained a copy from the Confraternity of St James, www.csj.org.ok/bookshop. She walked the route in 1999, so out of date by now. Details the 42 stages, but the stages were long - 30+ most days and one of 58km.

Gibraltar may be outside Schengen, but it is still part of the European Union -- therefore, no separate visa should be necessary.

BUT if your final airport is Gibraltar, then that will be your point of arrival in the EU, unless you disembark and pass through border controls elsewhere first -- if so you should make your visa request to the authorities there.
