Starting in October!

Hello
Im starting next week from SJPP, very excited >.< but also courious as to what time would be the best to stop(to guarantee a bed)?

I plan on doing the full walk as i have no time limit, so i am able to take it slow and enjoy the way. Just worried about possibly not getting a bed,(im traveling alone and wouldnt want to be caught outside).

Any advice would be very helpfull.

Hi! I think you will be fine for beds now. The number of pilgrims drops quite significantly in October. I'm not sure when some of the albergues will start to close down for winter, but I imagine you should be ok for a while yet. Buen Camino!

You'll be fine this time of year. Walk until you are ready, you'll find a place. And I say that as someone who called ahead several days because I was worried about a bed..... But this time of year, you'll be fine.

The end of October is a typical closing date, but in towns with more than one albergue, one will almost always be open for the winter. For the municipal albergues, you may have to call for the key.

Hi EllaBee! I'll be starting my first Camino hopefully from Leon (sadly fitness problems prevent me from doing it all in one go) on Oct 3 with a friend (i'm not brave enough to go solo as a girl! ) So excited! Maybe we'll see each other! buen camino!!

Also, a friend who walked it a few years ago advised us to just stop wherever we are at around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, to make sure we can get a bed in the albergue. Does this sound about right to the seasoned peregrinos??

Hey, yeah my uncle(who did it a few years ago) also saod to stop around that time, so take it slow, enjoy your time and dont stress. Yeah ill be going slow, as i have no time limit, so we might just spot eachother.

In October finding a bed won't be a problem, but stopping early will help limit fatigue. There is plenty to do: wash clothes, wash yourself, wander the town or village, and rehydrate. Sunset in October will be early, so dinner at 7 p.m. won't feel like the middle of the afternoon with the sun still high in the sky. Sunrise, too, will shorten the day, so it might still be dark-ish when they start clearing the albergue at 8-83o a.m. Six to seven hours of walking is plenty for the unambitious! Hey Ella- starting in Pamplona on Wednesday! Do not worry about finding a bed- I walked in October 2012 and never had an issue. Sometimes I was one of only 3 or 4 people in an albergue, and I never stayed in a full albergue (they definitely get more crowded in the last 100kms.)

I got to be friends with a man along the trail two years ago and he often wouldn't reach his destination until the evening! He took his time all day and really soaked everything in- took lots of various video footage and side trips. Many of my favorite moments along that trip were when he would suddenly pop around a corner at the albergue with a flourish upon his arrival!

Do not worry about your time, don't limit yourself, and most of all- just enjoy.

No. You should be fine. The numbers drop pretty sharply throughout October. Even now they're significantly lower than in the summer. Enjoy!
