LIVE from the Camino Tapia de Casariego

For those that have walked the Norte - did any of you take the coastal detour to Tapia de Casariego that is shortly before Ribadeo? If so, was it worth the detour? Any insights/advice about wayfinding, route marking etc. How is the alberque in Tapia?

I walked through Tapia de Casiariego about 18 months ago, and didn't know that it was a detour. It was a very pleasant place to stop for a break, but I walked from La Caridad (excellent municipal albergue) to Ribadeo (xunta one), so didn't check out its albergue. It was a wonderful day, much of it along or within sight of the coast, and I had a refreshing dip in the sea (unseasonably warm and calm for November) at a deserted beach an hour or so before Ribadeo.

Thanks for asking and @alansykes for answering! I was planning on doing that detour myself. I starting yesterday from Gijón - where I stopped in October - and am now in San Martín de Laspra, 7 km beyond Avilés. Lovely hospitalero here who has told me about an 'old' route which deviates from the "new" Camino. The old route was used before the bridge was made in Ribadeo. Before you arrive in Ribadeo there is a fork to the left. There are donativo albergues along the way.

In 2011 I heard that this variant was a really nice coastal alternate to the internal route. The hostel had good reviews at that time.

Isn't Tapia the place where the albergue is on the headland with direct access over the beach? I also assumed it was right on the camino? What is the official route, if not throughTapia?

I stayed in Tapia last October - I think most pilgrims went the other way!
It was a wonderful location for an albergue and donativo. The town has a beautiful little harbour and the ocean views are great!

Isn't Tapia the place where the albergue is on the headland with direct access over the beach? I also assumed it was right on the camino? What is the official route, if not throughTapia?

Correct - it is on the right as you enter the town and overlooks the sea. I stayed there in 2007, had the place to myself and thoroughly enjoyed the friendly town and it's lovely small harbour. Last year we pressed on to Figuereis which has a simply outstanding albergue.

We were there yesterday and it was absolutely wonderful, the albergue overlooks the ocean, very picturesque!
A number of pilgrims decided to stay an extra night.
Definitely worth the visit!
