I have always enjoyed the rail service in Spain, and in Galicia particularly, and found the staff helpful and very tolerant of this pilgrims poor Spanish.

This is the line linking Madrid and Ferrol and at least ten bodies are scattered around the track covered with blankets. All remain overturned train cars at the height of the viaduct Angrois AP-9 and fire emergency services and move to the crash site at the entrance to the capital of Galicia from the south. The penultimate car is wrecked. Train De Railment ...
I am in Santiago and headed to the Cathedral at 9:00 PM to view this evening's festivities and light show only to be turned around-- they have cancelled the St. James festival due to the tragic train crash. There is an uncertain energy in the city as pilgrims and and locals try and grasp the tragedy. Local news, as well as BBC are reporting 35 casualties. I'm deeply saddened by the news and have begun to feel the local devastation.

From what I can interpret ,following a massive public reponse to the call for blood donors the authorities are urging those with Donor Cards and blood type O- and A- to donate over the coming days.
People are desperate to help in any way they can. There will be a huge response from pilgrims around the world in the coming hours. I hope those in need will gain strength from that.

If I were in Santiago right now I would be beside myself feeling desperately sad for what has happened. Normally arriving there is a joyous occasion especially for those coming for the feast day. At times like this prayer is very helpful.

abc.es reporting 65 fatalities now. This has been a tragic event. It is hard to imagine what good can come from this, but already the strength of the human spirit is evident in the reponse by those directly involved in the event, and from others all over the world.

At least 77 people were killed and 143 injured - including one Briton - when a high-speed train careered off the rails in Spain last night and burst into flames.
The crash - the country’s worst In 41 years - happened when 13 carriages of the train from Madrid heading for the naval port of El Ferrol, with 218 passengers on board, left the tracks 3km outside Santiago de Compostela, in the northwestern region of Galicia.
Investigators said excess speed was the most probable cause, but stressed that the inquiry was at an early stage. The speed limit on that section of the track is 80kph (50 mph). The train had been travelling so fast that one of its carriages flew over the embankment and landed on a road above.
Witnesses confirmed that it had sped through a bend. “It was going so quickly . . . It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the carriages piled up one on top of the other,” Ricardo Montesco, a passenger, told Cadena Ser radio station.
“A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the carriages to get out and we realised the train was burning. I was in the second carriage and there was fire. I saw corpses.” Abel Rivas, 25, was among the first residents who came out of their homes to try to help the wounded.
“We heard a tremendous noise, enormous, like nothing else. We went down and we saw the train had been completely smashed,” he told Efe news agency. “We saw a huge cloud of smoke and one of the carriages was on fire. We saw injured people trying to get children out.”
Spanish television showed the bodies of some of the dead covered with blankets lying next to the mangled remains of the derailed carriages. There was a dense cloud of smoke above the wreckage.
A spokesman for the regional government’s office described the derailment, which happened at 8.42 pm local time, as an accident, but it will stir memories of the train bombing in Madrid in 2004, by Islamists, that killed 191 people.
The crash came less than two weeks after a French passenger train derailed just south of Paris, killing six people and injuring 30 more.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the Galician regional president, described the scene as “Dantesque”. “There are bodies lying on the railway track. There are also people whose lives are hanging in the balance in the operating theatre,” he said. “There is one carriage that has been crushed by another and emergency services have not been able to access it yet.”
Xaime López, a journalist for Cadena Ser radio, was clearly shaken when relating the tragedy to listeners. “Passengers said they were piled on top of each other inside the carriages. The road is full of bodies, full of bodies. It is really shocking.”
As rescue services worked to free passengers who were still trapped in the wreckage, the University Hospital in Santiago de Compostela issued an urgent appeal for blood donors to come forward because its stocks were low.
Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, tweeted: “I want to express my affection and solidarity with the victims of the terrible train accident in Santiago.” He is due to visit the site this morning.
The city, which is the site of an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of St James by Catholics from across the world, was about to celebrate its summer festival. City authorities cancelled the festival, which was due to start today on St James’s Day, as a mark of respect to the victims.
This was the first serious accident to hit the AVE high-speed train service, which has revolutionised travel across Spain by offering cheap tickets for fast journeys across the country.
The AVE network was the pride of the previous Socialist Government which ploughed billions of euros into it during a decade-long building boom.

In an attempt do create something positive from this sadness, I looking for the details of any fundraising on behalf of those affected by this incident, and would welcome any information. It is very early in the process, but many will have long term needs and I wonder how "we" pilgrims, here on the Forum and beyond, might help...

This far the investigators say the reason for this terrible accident is speed, 200kmh instead of 80kmh in that curve.

To everyone from countries who censor their news, especially the UK, I feel it is important to mention that the Spanish (and other European) news websites covering this story carry many shocking, disturbing photos of the aftermath of this terrible event. I heard the news late last night before going to bed. I am still in shock. I cannot imagine the grief in Santiago at the moment, but the reports of the extraordinary generosity and heroism of the volunteers and residents of Santiago in responding to the tragedy that are emerging in the news are tremendously heartening. It is surely a miracle of St. James.
As a friend of mine posted on Facebook in response to news of the tragedy, “May St. James greet (those who have died) at the gates of Heaven, where they can embrace him in person, rather than just his bust in the cathedral.”

Santiago is very somber and quiet (even the bagpipe has been silenced) it is a city in shock. Many Pilgrims had timed their way to end with celebrations on St James day, they are confused, they are more reserved on their arrival, it is difficult to know how to celebrate the journey of their lives but still remain respectful of the tragedy that has occurred .

I think the timetable situation will be fluid.
My advise is that if you are easily shocked please do not read any Spanish press. It is very normal here to show what some may call graphic or intrusive details in reports and photos.
I would like to also pass on my thanks to the heroes of this situation: The persons who live near to the accident, who helped rescue passengers, and laid out bedding and gave food and shelter to everyone. The firemen from neighbouring A Coruña who broke their strike and came to a neighbouring city; to all of the emergency services who have had to deal with, what I can only image were, scenes of devastation.
Thankfully the train services here in Spain are safe I hope they remain that way.

I was in Spain in May and actually travelled on this train (I think its the one that comes from Madrid and arrives in SDC around 9.00 pm).
Not really something Spanish economy needs at this time. :cry:

My sympathies to all affected by this terrible event. At such times we think of the families of those in the crash and offer prayers for them and the theirs. But also we must think of all the others affected, especially those emergency and medical people involved. Yes the crash has affected many, in Santiago and elsewhere, so we need to think of those too. I feel sorry for all pilgrims arriving at this time as their joy at arriving is marred in such a way. My thanks go to all in the Pilgrims Office who must be having a very difficult time themselves but still continue to help the Pilgrims.
