Yes, we're all on our own journey. But somehow, stepping off the “official” path makes it even more your own journey.

Between Uterga and Obanos, Eunate is a gem. The walk from the path and then back is easy, lots of wide open spaces, definitely the road less traveled. And you won't retrace your steps to regain the path. Best of all, when you reach the chapel there's no stream of hikers moving by to catch you up in their stream. Stopping here is different from stopping along the Camino proper.

Cañas http://www.spainisculture.com/en/monumentos/rioja_la/monasterio_de_santa_maria_de_san_salvador.html is even better, but getting there is definitely less fun when you turn out of Azofra, just a long tarmac straightaway. Like a 6 km runway underfoot, but lots of light and I saw hardly any traffic. There’s a very small hotel right outside the monastery so it makes a good end-of-day stop http://casonadecanias.crearjoomla.com/ So you can detour from the path and spend the night peacefully, too. The church is spectacular, with a fine museum where you're sure to find something to love. And the little town has some activity, but it's very very quiet. The next day's walk is pretty good, windy roads, little traffic (unless you want to retrace your steps, but why would anyone?)
