walking camino with the dog

Hi, to all and everybody !!

i am going under ultreaperegrino . i had already made Camino Francese some two years ago. so this year going to via de la plata, starting somewhere in april. so here i do have question , advice ..whatever....my question is...does anybody has expiriance about walking camino with the dog??? i want to take my dog with me. so most of the time i am going to sleep outdoor....well any sugestion, any expiriance will help. i do apriciate ...take care

hello ultreaperegrino....i walked to Finisterre last year and met a girl who had done the camino frances with her dog, the whole route from St. jean...she told me that dogs in general cant walk as far as we can , so she had to limit her distances to about 10 to 15 kms a day.(her dog was a bit old and fat)She carried a small lightweight tent, which served for camping where there is no refugio(the via Plata has long distances sometimes between albergues).Since you cannot take your dog into a lot of these albergues what she did was set up her little tent outside the refugio , and pay the fee for access to showers etc.

I have done the Via Plata and carried a tent, which is very useful , but it must be super lightweight.There are lots of places to camp, and in Spain the authorities will be quite sympathetic to a peregrino with a dog that cant make the distance, even when the laws prohibit camping.You can also just ask a farmer if you see one , and usually they are very eager to help a pilgrim find a spot to camp.The biggest issue on the Via Plata is carrying water, because of the distances involved.Are you planning to do the whole stretch , from seville?

There was a young woman walking with a dog last June when we were. She also carried a tent as she was usually unable to stay in the albergues. She was having to be very careful with her dog in the heat, as the hot track surface was not kind to his feet. Also, he struggled in the heat, and she was having to adapt her days to having long midday rests, then starting up again later in the afternoon so the dog could rest in the heat.
If you read Kaybee's blog that Arn mentioned, you will get an idea of some of the extra difficulties faced when walking with a dog.

thank you very much...i manage to read some of kaybee post at her blog...think she did great camino..salute to her!!! so to you to. ultrea what ever camino you are going to...as i already said i made camino frances in 2007...august-september ..walk to finisterre and muxia and back to santiago..was great but really great expiriance....yes

thank you all for your mails , advices ....made me happy actually , yes...as i already said i made camino francese , going to fisterre , muxia and back to santiago, backwards, which made me some problems sometimes, but yes was great expiriance ....so this year i am going to walk via de la plata...or my camino starting in gibraltar and than going to sevila..next merida.than to lisboa and fatima portugal..back to via de la plata...santiago..fisterre..muxia,,la coruna.....san sebastian...lourdes and taize france....so this is what is my desire, my plan ..my dream!!??? i do not know what of this all, but yes...i am retired 56 year old aviator...but yes i got this present this beautiful present -gift caled KANA, she is now amost six month old dog...she and i are now sharing this lifetime, so we are going together..i am aware of diferences walking alone or walking with someone another , and walking with the dog...so that is why i do apriciate each and every note you send to me....so again thanks to Arn...kiwiNomad06) ( i always loved new zeland!!....pilgrimmission ...yor replay is kind of blessing..gives me replay or idea how people do take alook at peregrino with the dog...you make me to see things easier)

The majority of campsites in Spain accept dogs. Many are seasonal - only open in the summer months of June to September.

Hello,

I've found several times pilgrims walking with their dogs.

In my opinion:

- Sometimes you have to stop because they can't continue.
- You have to carry always for them food and water.
- You need to sleep were dogs are accepted.
- Many problems walking: When you find other dogs they don't accept than a dog cross their territory.
- When you are in a road, you have to control your dog because traffic.
- Most time your dog can't walk "free", may be lost.
- You have to take care of their toes.
- Don't forget, you have choosen to walk the Camino, they only choose to be ALWAYS with you.

Buen Camino, even with your dog, your best friend.

Hi to every one , big hi from Fisterre...

had started via de la plata and in merida switch to fatima and proced with Caminho Portuguse to the Santiago and than fisterre and muxia and back...now taking some rest for going back with camino del norte, viceversa....if there is any advice, sugestion ...nice place to see would apriciate so very much.
and yes i am with my dog...it is not easy on the contrary..but it is chalange and .
caminho portuguese..beayutiful and chance to be alone ...to walk alone...and chance to meat beautiful people along the caminho.

Try to do a search in the "Google Custom Search" box towards the top right of every forum page. You will find many people there that have shared/asked questions related to dogs.

Those walking with animals may be glad to know the University of Leon is noted all over Spain for its veterinary science program. The campus is off the camino, but right in the city, and the vet faculty has an open, public clinic where your dog or cat (or ferret or canary or pony) can stop in for a checkup at a very nominal charge.

We took our Camino Dog Una there for surgery recently, and were quite impressed by the professional and kind treatment received.

i agree what you say newfydog, when i started this year from sevilla my dog was seven months old, and she made it all, one blister(we have dog shoe for this kind of troubles and heat of the road too) but yes she made 2000 km, and she enjoyed walking, running free where ever was a chance. and today she is beautiful strong dog lady with such an energy and nice nature!

I think perhaps you should consider cleaning up after the dog, especially if it does it's thing on the path.

And PLEASE be sure that the dog doesn't bark at, or jump on, or otherwise menace the pilgrims. I know that you think all that is harmless, but a person who doesn't know your dog will not.

I hope your journey with your dog was a success. We will be going hopefully Spring or Fall 2014 on the Camino Francais with our Jack Russell, who is a very hardy hiker from Colorado. He has done many 20K hikes over all terrains here in the Rockies, the Austrian Alps, and over many miles of cobblestone or asphalt street in the USA and in Europe. Fortunately we will have plenty of time and can do smaller distances rather than trying to do 20 k+ a day. Also will be staying in private accommodation along the way, no alberques. I have been having great success finding places that will accept our dog (and us as well )

for dog peregrinos- please remember their weight carrying capacity limit.

This is not a pun on our obsession with 10% ( actually , maybe we get our weight limit based on theirs!)
but for service dogs etc, the rehab specialists recommend no greater than 10% of body weight - up to 15% in mature adults.

remember that a 6 month old dog is still growing and the growth plates have not closed - in large breeds that closure may not be complete until almost 18 months. Excess weight on open growth plates has a strong impact on joints especially if there is any predisposition to hip dysplasia
( studies have shown keeping pups with hip dysplasia lean in their growing years meant less manifested hip disease later compared to heavier pups)
so my professional recommendation would be that YOU carry his weight if he is young like 6 or 7 months of age

Are you able to bring your dog to Europe without a quarantine period?

Yes, with a few exceptions, but it still requires an awful lot of paperwork, costs and months long planning and preparation.
