Walking in Feb. and need help!

Time of past OR future Camino
This upcoming February (2015)
Hello everyone! I can't believe the time is here. My ticket is booked... I'll be flying into Madrid on Friday, Feb. 27 at 8:30 AM and need help getting transportation to St. Jean Pied de Port in order to start walking by the next morning.

I'll be doing the Camino in two stages so will also need transportation from Burgos to Madrid. Can anyone help me out here, as well?

If there is any other advice you can give me (on weather, clothes, etc.), please pass it on.

Thanks so much!!! Michael

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
If there is any other advice you can give me (on weather, clothes, etc.), please pass it on.

There's a good few threads on here about walking in winter which will be of help to you. Take a look and shoot us your questions that are still left. Good luck working the transportation out, there are also threads on that too :)

The only public transport to SJPdP in February is SNCF train/bus from Bayonne and Transports 64 buses from Bayonne and Pau via Palais.

Note: at time of writing tracks between Cambo les Bains and SJPdP are washed out. The TER 62 train goes from Bayonne to Cambo les Bains. Passengers tranfer there to an SNCF operated bus (autocar) that terminates in SJPdP.

Travel options from Madrid to Bayonne and SJPdP include the following:

2075 Travel from Madrid to Saint Jean Pied de Port via San Sebastian, Irun, Hendaye, and Bayonne.

2076 Executive Summary

The break of gauge between France and Spain's railway, and crossing the border, make this route appear somewhat complicated but it isn't really. Three options are discussed with many variables in each.

Three options are discussed. Madrid to SJPdP by Train. Madrid to SJPdP by Bus. Madrid to San Sebastian by Plane and onward by bus or train to SJPdP.

In essence:
Renfe trains from Madrid terminate at Irun/Hendaye.

ALSA buses from Madrid go to San Sebastian where there are myriad transport options to Irun/Hendaye. (Euskotren, ALSA, Ekialde bus, Renfe Cercanius etc).

San Sebastian Airport is located close to Irun/Hendaye.

There are ATCRB buses and SNCF trains from Irun/Hendaye to Bayonne.

There is SNCF train service, usually 4 times per day, all year from Bayonne to SJPdP.

The other option is to take bus, train, or plane to Pamplona. In February there is only taxi service to SJPdP ... and that assumes the road is open.

Okay, so I'm seeing that a LOT is closed in February. As useful as all of that information is and as thankful for it as I am, it's a bit confusing trying to figure out what's open and what's not. Can you all give me YOUR best opinion on the way to get there, since I guess Feb. is an off month?

Renfe train from Madrid to Irun/Hendaye. (border crossing and change of gauge)

SNCF train from Irun/Hendaye to Bayonne.

Use the Euskotren to go from Irun to Hendaye if the Renfe train terminates in Irun and the next SNCF train leaves from Hendaye.

SNCF train from Bayonne to Cambo les Bains and SNCF autocar onward to SJPdP.

Use the other stuff to find alternative schedule options.

Perfect, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I'm having trouble booking it online - it's saying:

The train consulted is not available for sale right now. Try again later and sorry for the inconvenience .

Know anything about this?

The schedule will change at least twice between then and now due to Christmas travel season. Try again after 10 Jan 2015. Sometimes schedule information is updated not more than a month in advance of travel.

You can usually make plans based on what's running today. Most likely there will be trains and buses added for Christmas and deleted after the season is over. That would leave the schedule similar to what it is now.

Burgos: note that the Burgos train station is way up north of the city, not at all convenient. The bus station is very close to the cathedral, and there is an excellent bus service to and from Madrid Airport. This saves a lot of hassle going into the centre of Madrid, if you are about to fly out of Spain.

There is a bus every day but Sunday from Pamplona to Roncesvalles. From there you can take a taxi to SJPdP. If you are not obsessed about starting in SJPdP, start in Pamplona. It makes starting very easy, and avoids potential weather problems crossing the Pyrenees. I think Corazon Puro is still closed in February, but you can contact them to be certain.

Hi Michael,

Here is a link at http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/p..._to_point.affiliates&AID=10424884&PID=2239503
It takes about 3 1/2 hours to Pamplona. From there you have a few options of bus, taxi or http://www.corazonpuro.es/Enghome.html to St. Jean Pied de Port
Use the train link to get back.

At least this is the direction I am leaning towards since I will only have 14 days to walk. How many are you planning?
Thanks for your information. Very helpful. It's looking like going through Pamplona is the way to go. Easiest, at least. And I plan on splitting up my Camino into two trips. You?

Thanks! Which would you recommend - bus or train to Pamplona? I came across a Conda bus which leaves directly from the airport it looks like. If this is true, that'd be great .My flight lands at 8:30 AM, and it looks like the bus leaves Pamplona at 6 PM, correct?

I like the train: its faster and more comfortable. That being said, a lot of people like the convenience of taking the bus from the airport.

To reiterate: there is no bus service from Pamplona to SJPdP in February.

Further, there is not a taxi rank in Roncesvalles. Population is 30.

Does anyone know if the road between Roncesvalle and SJPdP is open in winter months?

Does anyone know what it costs to get a taxi from Roncesvalles to SJPdP? Does that price include driving from Pamplona to pick you up?

Conda is owned by ALSA. All schedule information for Conda buses is on the ALSA website. Compania Navarra de Autobuses ... my guess is the name is retained for political reasons.

Update and GOOD NEWS! The 10:45-15:35 bus is in the AM, correct? (my flights lands at 8:30 AM) If so, there's a 15 Euro special going on apparently. Seems to good to be true, but hopefully it's not. Also, Express Bourricot has offered to take me from Pamplona to SJPdP for 100 Euros, so I'm going to try and find a group.

Hey all, ALSA and Movelio won't accept my debit card. Transactions keep getting denied. I called Bank of America and they said it's nothing on their end. Do you know what I can do to buy this ticket ahead of time?

I think I paid ALSA using PayPal. If you do not have an account, you can still make a onetime payment through PayPal (I think; I don't use my debit card for PayPal).

The websites wants to 'see' your credit card. In Europe they use card readers to 'see' the chip.

He did say he was using a debit card... you can't make this kind of transaction using a debit card.

Debit cards can be a problem for some internet transactions because of the need for a PIN. PayPal seems to have that issue under control, and ALSA accepts PayPal. So a debit card can be used through PayPal (in some cases).

Falcon's right and it's good advice :)

Hi brawblether.
I see you walked in February this year and I am planning to do so in 2015. Did you leave from St Jean? If so I'm sure you took the Valcarlos route. Was it quite walkable with the weather? I left mid March this year and the weather was clear enough for me to walk the Napoleon. Know there is little chance of that in Feb and but i don't know much about the Valcarlos. Any advice would be great :)
Thanks.

I'll answer you in PM to save hijacking the thread :)

First off, thank you all for your input. This forum has proven to be invaluable for my upcoming trip. You all rock :)

Next two questions:

I land in Madrid at 8:30 and bought an ALSA bus ticket for 10:45. This is, of course, if everything goes off without a hitch. Have any of you transferred to T4 in Madrid and if so, how long did it take? Worst case scenario, the plane gets delayed and I miss the bus - would tickets be sold out, usually, if I were to walk up to the counter and want to buy one for the next departing bus? I'm sure all will be fine but I'm just trying to cover all my bases.

Also, which Burgos bus terminal is best to leave from?

As I said, thanks so much!

The bus stand is at the terminal building exit of T-4, and well marked. Finding the correct bus stand is not obvious, but there are not a lot of buses to choose from; just check each one. The driver will have a roster with your name and seat on it. There is no counter; drivers sell tickets as needed. You have plenty of connect time, so I doubt that you will miss your bus. They rarely run full, so the next one should be able to accommodate you.

Burgos suddenly???:) I presume that is your end point. There is only one bus terminal in Burgos. It is across the bridge from the cathedral, under a ten minute walk. The train station is on the far north of the city, too far to walk.

I am walking in May. I was wondering how you got from Pamplona to St. Jean? Express Bouricot only travels from St. Jean to Pamplona and not the reverse. Thanks for the help.

Does anyone else on this thread know the answer?

I don't know how he got there, but I have a reservation to stay at Corazon Puro, close to Roncesvalles, my first night. I also booked a pickup in Pamplona from the Alsa bus from the airport and a ride to St Jean P de P the next morning. Check the website for availability. This is a much favoured option for many camino members. I am going in September.

I also booked a pickup in Pamplona from the Alsa bus from the airport and a ride to St Jean P de P the next morning. Check the website for availability. This is a much favoured option for many camino members. I am going in September.

I booked teletaxi San fermin to pick us up at the train station at 14:40 and drive us to st. Jean on May 25, 2015. 100€. Anyone care to join us?
