Wearing a Shemagh on Camino?

MorgDoel

New Member
I was planning to take one and wear it as a scarf to protect my neck, and to wear it as a head scarf as well at times on trail, and all it's other purposes, I'm going next week.

But I've been advised not to due to stereotyping and such.

So has anyone had a problem or seen any people having problems for wearing one ?
Many thanks
Buen Camino!

I wore a bright red shemagh all along the camino Norte and it was invaluable, it protected me from sunburn, kept my neck warm on days of wind and rain, gave me something to carry my gear to the beach in, made a curtain when hung on a bunk bed, etc. I met other people wearing shemaghs without any problem. It never occurred to me that it might be seen as a stereo type. Take it, wear it, and enjoy it. Buen camino!

I can't see a problem with it. As far as I know it has no special significance in Spain that should make wearing one any different from doing so at home. I've considered taking mine, but I always wear a hat anyway, so probably just didn't see enough added benefit.

Why would you be concerned with the opinions of ignorant bigots?

Negative stereotypes should be dispelled with defiance. Living in fear of them gives them power they don't deserve.

I wore a shemagh along the Salvador and the Frances. Never experienced anything like that and would be very surprised to have done. I wouldnt travel without one.
