Camino Frances (Sept. 2013)
Camino Portuguese (Sept. 2015)
I walked the Camino from SJPP to Santiago this past Sept. 2013. I am considering the Camino del Norte route from Irun to Santiago for September 2014. For those who have walked both, is it hotter or cooler on the coast or more/less rainy as compared to the SJPP to Santiago route at this time of year. Any advice would help me to determine packing needs. Thanks.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Because it follows the coast, the weather on North route is more variable and harder to predict. I walked it in the spring this year and it was very wet and muddy, but then I returned in September and the weather was great, and the paths dry. If you are walking it, make sure you cover both contingencies, good waterproofs and warm clothes for evenings, but t-shirt, shorts and sunblock for the good days. Chances are if you walk all the way from Irun, in the time that it takes, you will encounter all weather conditions. Be prepared for serious rain, and then enjoy the sunshine when it comes. The North is very different from the Frances, with less infrastructure and cafes to stop for a break, but it is a fantastic route. I had a ball walking it, I hope you do too. Buen Camino!
