Time of past OR future Camino

I am now getting itchy as I am planning to do the Camino del Norte in September. I found myself laughing as I remembered my Spring 2022 Camino. I entered Pamplona on April 1st hiking through the snow from Zubiri. I checked into the Albergue Plaza Catedral. It probably has about 40 beds. By dinner time, about 25 were occupied by perigrinos. When most of us were getting back to the albergue, we found that about 15 young gals (I guess 18 years old) were checking in. It was a Friday and given Pamplona is a large city, these youngsters were in a partying mood. The perigrinos got to sleep at their usual hour only to be awakened by raucous laughter between 2 AM and 3 AM. (A few beers too many I suppose). Most of us simply rolled over, pulled the pillow over our heads and tried our best to get back to sleep. Most of us awakened by 5:30 AM so to get an early start - the forecast called for snow. (Those of you who were on the Camino in this region remember hiking through knee deep snow that day). As we made a cup of coffee and started pulling on our shoes and coats, the entire group of youngsters, still hungover, came out of their bunk rooms and "shhhhhhhhhhh'ed" us for several minutes. Each and every one of us simply looked up to their second floor landing for a fleeting second, shook our heads briefly and then went on with our business. We all chuckled as we exited the albergue!!

Before too many years and decades pass many of those 15 young women will have their lives upended by motherhood where they will hope and pray for just an hour or two of sleep not interrupted by the uncompromising needs and demands of a younger generation incapable of having concern for her needs.
