A sunny Saturday but no time to go far - still it was very pretty.
Sunday was gray and almost rainy but perfect walking weather for a longer (about 10K) walk to the edge of the land and back, past some behemoths of beech trees, real ents!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Good to walk (and talk) 14km yesterday, Surrey woods and hills with my good Camino walking companion. No fancy photos, a grey day but walks like this are so good for the soul.

Correction 14 km not 24 km !!

OK, Ok, I will explain. It's funny, and the joke's on me. Because I actually wasn't joking.
When you look at the bottom of the pole it can look like it is hovering directly above the plaque that's in front of it. So when I first saw the photo I thought...plexiglass?? Um....a huge magnet??? The mind couldn't imagine how that could possibly be done.
I realized it was an optical illusion only after seeing your responses. Hahahaaaaa:D
And...we can make this a funny thread too....just saying

When I tried to upload this picture to my blog and it got all shadowy as the upload proceeded, it really did look like it was floating. Noone here could understand why I was giggling.

I posted these pictures on the Voie de Tours forum. This is a new refuge for pilgrims, a quiet place to sit and rest on the section between Saintes and Pons. Photos taken almost two weeks ago in the then sunny France 17. IMG_20180422_211758_075.jpgIMG_20180422_211407_955.jpg

I had a walk today!! Which may seem like nothing but I haven't been outside all week - there were things that needed doing instead. It wasn't long, only an hour or so, but a gray afternoon turned into a sunny evening and so I was treated to the first blue sky in a week! Fortunately, the big trees are gorgeous no matter what the weather and the puddles make very nice reflections...and the flowers are out.20180430_194636.jpg20180430_195209.jpg20180430_195315.jpg20180430_195358.jpg20180430_195426.jpg20180430_195707.jpg

Dragged myself from the couch on this National holiday.
Always have difficulty to get back to some local walks after a Camino.
Glad I went though. 9 Celsius , cloudy and windy : perfect for me.
Only met 2 mountainbikers and a farmer.
Guess everyone else is to a gardencentre...;)

Just that one sentence brought back an avalanche of memories. Garden centres in spring? That was fun...even if they were bottomless holes in the ground that got fertilized with money. New English rose varieties, bedding plants, fresh vege seeds, perennials, shrubs...the odd tool or two...
So that would be a walk! Go with a trolley, get whatever you want so long as you can drag your new treasures back home. It would certainly enforce frugality and practicality.:cool:
And we want to see the pics!:p

How to speak Dutch: Lekker; nice, sweet, tasty, good etc

This word can be used for almost anything. Pretty much anything good is ‘lekker’. When applied to food it means that the food was tasty (eg ‘Hoe zijn de worsten?’ ‘Heel lekker’ -> ‘How are the sausages?’ ‘Very nice’). It can also be applied to people, a good looking person is referred to as a ‘lekkerding’, which translates literally to a ‘sweet thing’. From what I have learnt, there seem to be no limits to this word. The most common Dutch way of saying goodnight is ‘slaap lekker’, which translates to ‘sleep nice’. I haven’t done any research, but from what I have seen this could literally be the most commonly used word in Dutch.

Now try to translate 'gezellig'. That'll keep you busy for a while... ;)

When I saw the word, it reminded me of a German word. I learned German in school LONGLONG AGO> It is a beautiful word, and wikipedia captures it this way: the heart of Dutch culture

Gezelligheid (Dutch pronunciation: [ɣəˈzɛləxɛit] (About this sound listen)) is a Dutch word which, depending on context, can be translated as conviviality, coziness, fun. It is often used to describe a social and relaxed situation. It can also indicate belonging, time spent with loved ones, catching up with an old friend or just the general togetherness that gives people a warm feeling.
A common trait to all descriptions of gezelligheid is a general and abstract sensation of individual well-being that one typically shares with others. All descriptions involve a positive atmosphere, flow or vibe that colours the individual personal experience in a favorable way and in one way or another corresponds to social contexts.
Being a vague, abstract notion, the word is considered by some to be an example of untranslatability, and one of their hardest words to translate to English. Some consider the word to encompass the heart of Dutch culture.[1]

Since we're on a Camino-forum, let me try to translate it another way. Remember how you felt after a good days walk, sitting outside watching the sun go down after a nice meal, and suddenly you're joined by some of the friends you made the past few days. Wine is ordered and stories unfold all around you. I'd say that is "gezellig".

You paint a picture of the day we arrived in Santiago and sat with our walking companions, the ones we had walked with all along the way from Roncesvalles...and then those we walked with from Porto... how lovely, how serendipitous!

Yesterday was a bank holiday in Slovakia, so I went on a hike with the Vatra walking group to the Great Fatra mountain range, about an hour by car from where we live. It was a demanding hike for me with a steep 900m climb at the beginning, and some very steep rocky downward sections later. We had lovely weather and fantastic views in every direction, and a cool beer at a mountain chalet half way along - well worth the effort.

The Keukenhof is an astonishing place this time of year.
Very nice pics, Peter - thank Marianne for us! Lekker!

Today I walked to and around Naarden Vesting, about 7 kms. It's a lovely spring day and the hawthorn has started blooming, so the scent was all along the way.
Old Naarden is a fortified town, and its shape reminds me a lot of the fort in Pamplona (with water...it's Holland after all). And I just found out thanks to Wikipedia that the fortifications were built in 1572 by the King Phillip II of Spain. There's a complicated history hereabouts.....

[Edit...and thanks for the Dutch lessons. Very useful, I can tell you!!]

Well, tonight I went to see a footy match at a friend's house who lives bang on top of the historic Rome <<--->> Santiago Camino (Via Aurelia) just above the Monaco border.

Walked home for about 1K 'round midnight under delicious night rain conditions with my Pilgrim cape and Staff, on the Camino, then off-Camino for another short K -- then somehow a taxi driver offered me a kindly as surprising free taxi lift home.

Is that enough to qualify me as a "taxigrino", I wonder, and does it disqualify me from my "True Pilgrim" title ?

Welterusten, everyone!
Here's my evening walk in the Beech-tree cathedral. The centre where I am for another day or so is in an area where people live who have more money than I can imagine. There are a few smaller properties on the edge of the neighborhood, probably just millionaires rather than quintrillionaires - and some perhaps are nouveau-riche. The gate makes me smile every time I go by it. ;)
Fortunately, the rest of us hoi polloi are still allowed to walk there - and for us there are yellow arrows! I found this one today.

I found myself back doing the same walk as last Sunday. But I left early morning instead of mid afternoon and so felt so much fresher and happily took the longer hilly way home.

Seems to be a pattern after my latest Caminos : some minor ailments called something with " itis " at the end.;) Relative rest and no long walks and certainly no yoga...
Was able to enjoy sunshine and take some pictures while doing my housecalls.
The inner courtyard of my old Abbeyschool I attented and the tower.

Enjoy your travels, until we see you posting again.
Thank you Miss K, my first post in a couple of weeks. Great day here in my other home, Mi Casita Tranquila, our plants received a lot of rain in the past couple of weeks and now everything is green and colorful. Great place to walk and to keep the black dog at bay. Photos of our plants on the right-front and backyard. No pares de caminar.

Buenos dias, caminantes. Gracias Miss T for the good looking photos (I like the cold looking lake). Adding my two centimos to this conversation, just back from a very rewarding long walk. Photos of my walk by a green valley next to a volcanic hill (today), and near a dormant volcano (yesterday). Cloudy skies here today. Muchas gracias, y no pares de caminar.

Just back from a three day hike from one side of the Velka Fatra mountain range to the other. There were some real camino moments - carrying a proper pack, staying in a hiker's hostel in bunkbeds, a camino angel who turned up just at the right moment, sore feet, fantastic beer, fabulous views, and finally trudging through a town with our packs to the train station.

A full couple of days in beautiful Leiden.
But there was time to walk, in the botanical gardens, and around the city - and the highlight of the week in the walking realm was a several hour ramble over the dunes near the sea with @LTfit this afternoon- which was so wonderful, on so many levels. Heartfelt thanks!!
Now my legs hut. It's great.

the traditional tour around Ljubljana in memory of the city being birbe-wire-fenced-off completely during the second world war by the Italians (and then by the Germans). this was my 11th or 12th time in a row (except that one time I was on a camino), and more then 30.000 people attended in the last years (it's a good preparation for francés, if anything). everyone gets a little booklet to collect the stamps in and a bronze medal at the end. about 32km in 7h15. tough because there's only one climb!
it was also the last goodbye of my trustee sneackers, the second pair in two weeks. :/

What a lovely walk it was @VNwalking . The weather gods were on our side (although I should have taken you up on your offer to use sunscreen:cool:). It was such a pleasure sharing our common Camino experiences while walking in my back yard. To be repeated!

I believe that it is the first time returning to this thread since its inception back in 2016 (gracias @SabineP !). Somehow it just wasn't on my radar. My loss. Fun to see many of the places that you told me about while walking @VNwalking .

To the rest of the contributors - what a fantastic thread! A thousand likes to you all. Beauty does truly surround us, we just need to take the time to look!

A fascinating event - I really like the idea of it. Congratulations on your bronze medal and impressive time!

thank you, @frances.
I believe ljubljana was the only town/city that was completely encircled in such a way. I don't know who's idea it was to make a tree-lined promenade in memory of it, but it's certainly one of the better ideas the city planners had in decades. partial tours have been taking place since 1946, the first complete tour was organized in 1957, and the arrangement of the gravel lanes and tree alleys was complete in 1985.

it's almost all flat, hence the timing. and the company was nice. :)

I actually have a silver medal, too, you get it after five completed tours. ten completed tours get you a gold medal. perhaps it's time I apply for that as well. :p

Together with my peregrina friend from Amsterdam, who I met on the CP in 2016, we stayed for a few days at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran off the West Coast of Scotland. Had a beautiful 8 mile coastal walk to Sannox then the next day visited the standing stones at Machrie Moor near Blackwaterfoot. Arran is often referred to as Scotland in miniature, having the jagged peaks in the north and the lower ground in the south. Needless to say we explored the local culture,IMG_1016 (1).JPGIMG-20180503-WA0031.jpgIMG-20180502-WA0004.jpgIMG_1016 (1).JPGIMG-20180503-WA0031.jpgIMG-20180502-WA0004.jpgIMG-20180502-WA0029.jpg which included a visit to the Lochranza Distillery to learn how the spirit is made and to sample the finished product. The images are duplicated - don't know how to remedy this and welcome advice.

Thank for explaining further. It sounds brilliant. If I go to Ljubljana I'll have a look at the promenade for myself.

that sounds wonderful! give me a heads-up here and perhaps I will join you.
you don't need to be there for the annual event, the tour can be completed at any time. they have installed permanent stamps last month, all you need is an ink pad (and the booklet?).
some info in english: http://www.pohod.si/Odogodku.aspx
there is also a new app: http://www.pohod.si/PotObZici.aspx
