This just about sums it up for me.
An old weathered grey drab timber fence, so typical in these parts, and in the distance a soft white puffy sun-filled cloud against a powder blue sky. Now that got me thinking, and walking. I just kept walking because the sun just kept shining. 7812923C-D372-4F2C-99DD-E1DF19524380.jpeg

All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
We had a nice walk in the fog yesterday and we ended at "Slot Loevestein".

Despite some ‘nervousness’, I’ve decided to post a couple of my own photos, taken on my iphone this week.

There was a healthy chump of sea rocket just as we hit the beach … those leaves were unmistakable 😉

We walked down to the beach through the woods … down to the stream at the bottom of a mini-ravine, and up the other side … a steep descent and steeper climb. I was too busy with my poles to remember to take any photos. 🙂

Here goes:

That green reminds me of the colour of the first beech leaves against a deep blue sky 🙂
I always look for it, every year … and then I lie beneath it for as long as I can …

The morning began with an overcast sky, but brightened during my walk along Roberts Bank and Brunswick Point. I watched a Red-wing Blackbird picking fluff off a cattail and a Northern Flicker feasting on crabapples. They don't really show up in the photos, but lovely purple / mauve asters are blooming along the fields, paths and out on the tidal flats.

There are days when all you want is to be in the light, feel the sun and listen to the sea. Days too when you walk through this landscape and feel like you’re seeing it for the very first time, as though it and you were just born this minute.

Now, are you sitting comfortably? My address this week is in a flat in Pamplona!
Today we walked from a village about three miles off the main road approaching Irotz, just before Zabaldika.
While the peak is slightly higher than the highest peak in Ireland, our actual ascent was just over 600 metres. I just know I needed my sticks, and my knees were sore coming down. At the top, what a view!
I add some photos, and when I get home, I hope to add a short video, but it is too large to add right now.
The fourth photo shows the ermita in an abandoned village on the way up, and the fifth is of a flower known as 'Quita Meriendas', indicating that the season for picnics oudoors is coming to an end. The wall panel shows the point from which I took the video, Lakarri. If you enlarge the photo you might find it.
We stopped on the way home, in Irotz, although we resisted going in for a swim. They have changed the railings since I last was there. I took a photo to show the three options for continuing after Irotz: concrete path, leading to the picnic area where it is possible to choose to climb, and skirt the mountain, or follow the river path to Huarte. The top option is the least attractive, along the main road, leading to the picnic area. The middle path leads to Zabaldika Lower, and again there comes a choice to join the concrete path or to turn right and cross the main road and scramble up the hill to Zabaldika Upper, where the church and albergue are. From there you can join the skirting mountain path, to Trinidad de Arre.

I walked 5 miles with a friend today on some quiet country roads and saw these three lovely Puffball mushrooms in the ditch. I didn't have my phone with, so when I went back later to get them, I took this picture at home...I used my flip flop for "scale". The biggest is the size of a "soccer ball". I cubed a portion of one, added it to a pasta dish for dinner, and refrigerated the rest. I enjoy foraging.😃

Hmmm, does anyone know why my images don't show up in the body of my post above? They were visible when I put the message together but now only seem to be links to the images.

Might it be because you didn’t choose ‘thumbnail’ images?

Just a thought ….

There are some beautiful images there!

There was an issue with certain types of images from Apple phones at one stage but then it stopped being talked about and so I assumed that it had gone away. I can't remember the exact details but only some particular types of images and only from iPhones. Perhaps someone with an Apple phone can comment?

'Quita Meriendas'

I thought that was a lovely name for the autumn crocus ..says it all 😉

But, in my ignorance re the Spanish language, I discovered that if you run the two words together into one word, in ‘Goggle Translate‘, it means ‘lunch break’!!
Time for a Menú del dia 😉

Take 2... (I'm don't use an Apple phone, and I've successfully posted full size jpgs in the past here without this issue). If I use the insert image option, above the posting area, I only get a link that says "View Attachment" when I post the message. This is what I get if I try to attach a file (there is no thumbnail option when I do this):

I just posted a photo … which I’ve now deleted. … by using ‘Attach files ’, (under the post area) ‘Photo Library‘, ‘Insert‘ and then I selected the ‘Thumbnail’ option.

We can still see your images, btw, by clicking on them individually …
They are beautiful!! 🙂

I don't have any options past Attach Files. Once I choose an image from my files, it uploads, but isn't visible except as a generic icon. No options for insert or thumbnail. I'm on a PC.

Thanks for the compliment! I just wish they were easier to view!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Number one grandson is here again and today we went exploring playgrounds around the harbour close to my home.

One of the playgrounds is close to a hardstand area where yachts are pulled out for repairs and we spotted this tired lady as we walked.
IMG_20211011_135227.jpg
Two of the playgrounds are close to the Auckland Harbour Bridge and so we explored under the bridge.
IMG_20211011_140359.jpgIMG_20211011_141301.jpg
Then, not far away there is a tunnel that runs under the motorway on the north side of the bridge and so we walked under the motorway and got a photo from the other side.

My locality these days is straddling CF and C Baztan...today it was a short section of the Baztan. Lanz to Olague, and a detour up a wee tiny road to find a viewing point, before walking back to Lanz. We saw 6 graceful deer racing across a field - too fast to capture. A group of horses, a handful of cows, and a couple of flocks of sheep. We found an iphone. Soon enough the owner, who had passed us on our return stretch, rang - as I knew would happen - so we arranged to drive to Olague and hand it over at the bar. Later we took a slow road over the mountains, coming out to the main road just before Zubiri, and back into Pamplona.

2017 Camino Frances,
2019 C. Portuguese (inland).
Yesterday I walked from the poor end of this great city of ours to the rich end, 35 km away. From one end to the other, trying to put out the fire inside. Eight hours without rest, following the edge where the land meets the sea. The colour of the sky and the deep blue sea bring some peace, not much. The straight line of the horizon - a reminder that not all things in life are crooked.
Step by step I unfold my crumpled thoughts and lay them out, trying to make sense of the mess. At every step I ask myself, what do I think, how do I feel, what should I do? And when I finally get back to where I started, I'm none the wiser, none the quieter, restless as ever and in my chest the fire continues to rage and burn, but I sit and watch TV, have my dinner and make for bed late at night, not tired from my exertions, nor at peace nor resolved and less certain than ever about the shape and colour of this world.
I think I need the Camino as much as it needs me.
Thanks to God, the countdown begins.

I went for a wander today, along by the river and up the hill that the bulls tear up during San Fermin. I was delighted to come across the old Mercado and went in for a nosey. I asked some of the stall holders for permission to take a few photos. Fish, parts of poor old pig, some other animals I am ashamed to post, and then some veg. The tomatoes are local, and the Padrón Peppers come from ...Padrón! I stood beside Mr Hemingway, but he wasn't too talkative. Anyway, here is a selection of the photos I took, including a couple with typical pintxos.
i forgot to take the tomatoes and peppers in situ, they are sitting on the counter in the kitchen.

Just got back to this thread after a week away on the Camino
very much a last minute decision
walked from Sarria to Santiago
had a great time but I didn’t take many photos as it was too much hassle taking the iPad out of the rucksack
first one at Bardadalo as I’d got Sarria around 1.30 and decided to walk there
an early morning photo
The luxurious Casa Rural…and I mean luxurious re comfort with a huge garden and statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the hallway
various churches
Inside The Cathedral
and early morning before the crowds arrived
I will write mor re the Camino that never happened!!

Another local walk, local for me this week at any rate. From Trinidad de Arre to Zabaldika, along the mountain path - can you hear the song? I love to go awandering...
I passed around 50 pilgrims from a variety of countries: Spain, Brasil, Belgium, France, Italy, South Africa, Korea, Germany, The Netherlands. One Australian, but she has been with family in France for some time...otherwise she too would still be waiting for the word go! The albergue in Zabaldika is closed, and tomorrow would have been their last day - the plan as it stands is that they will reopen in mid April 2022.

A long, meandering 11km walk along the river path from the barrio in Pamplona where I am staying: right around the river walk, and across the puente de la Madalena, and past the greenhouses and rows of lettuces that are visible as pilgrims emerge from Burlada and walk up towards the Cathedral. Later, Media Luna, and the double sided Gothic Pilgrim Cross in Avenida de la Baja Navarra, from which the Cathedral is clearly seen.

I took a tumble and haven’t walked for a while due to a very badly bruised leg. I’ll spare you a photo of the gory damage, lol. I’m doing better, so yesterday I climbed a small mountain with my hiking group, with beautiful scenery all around. The group has transitioned from hiking in the mountains, which are now getting snowy, to the dry, lower elevations, which are now cooler and where all the rattlesnakes are hibernating. I hope.

On seeing that beautiful and powerful figure of Archangel Michael (above) I couldn’t help reflecting on how uplifting it must be to allow oneself to be transported into this holy world of angels and saints and divine love. It’s such an attractive, appealing and uplifting idea and it’s this idea that has given us cathedrals that boggle the mind, defy gravity and defy rational explanation. Thank heavens for religion. Apart from nature, the arts, and love, it’s the only other thing that can lift us out of the mundane and the ordinary.

St Michael is also the patron of the military. I was quite the Archangel-stalker when I was on Camino.

It seems like you live in a magical place but I suspect you are what brings out that magic.

I am still walking circles around my neighborhood on the streets and trails. Something new to look at: the first of the Halloween decorations. It’s not the angle of my shot, that skeleton is almost as tall as the two story house!

Edit: the men in the neighborhood get quite competitive about this holiday…it will be interesting to see how everyone responds

Yesterday I had a wonder-ful day. We drove towards Tudela, and visited Las Bardenas. I will post something about that place in my wordpress blog eventually. Suffice it to say just now that it is really a natural treasure. It is now a desert, but millions of years ago it was under water. We eventually moved on to Tudela and after a fine meal with friends we went for a quick walk around the city. I have a tiny selection of photos To share now. One is of a 4 year old kangaroo being minded by our friends. It is a long story, but they hope it will be paired with a partner eventually. They are just taking care of it for the moment. The ubiquitous Irish pub in the main square, some details from the Cathedral, and a flavour of the local fiesta

A before and after sunset walk in my neighbourhood. A close encounter with a lovely coyote. The Lesser Snow Geese are arriving in huge numbers now on their Pacific Flyway migratory path from Wrangel Island in Siberia. Some will stay here for the winter and many more will continue south to Washington State and Northern California. A clear night for the rise of the almost full Hunter Moon.

If this is considered advertising, which is not the intention, I am fine if it is deleted.

Last week, after visiting Las Bardenas, I was fortunate enough to meet an artist, sculptor, from a barrio of Zaragoza, now living in Tudela: Pedro Jordan. the kangaroo I wrote about earlier is in Pedro's garden...
I was very impressed with his work, and now when looking for him online, I found a link that is not connected to Facebook - I never open anything to do with Facebook, willingly. Pedro is a brother of someone I knew, who died too young...
His work is ongoing, even after a serious accident in Las Bardenas, as far as I understand...that stopped him in his (bicycle) tracks. I hope you will enjoy seeing his works.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!

Looking forward seeing your pictures and stories behind it.
In an attempt to replicate the multi-day pilgrimage experience I am walking from my home on Vancouver Island to Langley BC on the Lower Mainland staying nights with family along the way.
Day 1: ferry to Brentwood Bay and walking mostly along 2 lane roads to Swartz Bay. Take an extended break along the Salish Sea to wash my feet and find public restrooms and a pub in Sidney. Stealth camp in my hammock with a tarp overhead. 17.5 kms. No blisters. Rained all night.

The word which sprung to mind, on viewing his sculptures, was ’sinuous’ … he’s an assiduous, prolific, artist, who works in several different mediums … and only the last works shown in his gallery seem to be ‘on a different trail’.
Thanks, @kirkie , for the opportunity to see the work of an impressive artist!

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!

Looking forward seeing your pictures and stories behind it.
Day 2 of trip to Langley, BC and back: I decamped and walked 3 kms in the dark with headlamp on the Lochside Trail to the ferry terminal at Swartz Bay. I had a hearty breakfast served by friendly crew. Almost immediately after disembarking in Tsawwassen I got my first blister along the causeway. I enjoy the surprising serenity on the the oceanside trail with the cranes and trains of the massive DeltaPort in the background. Northward I go through the flat farmland of Delta, enjoy a hot chocolate (coffee is trouble!) in Ladner and hop on a bus to get tbrough the tunnel under the Fraser River. I am tired and sore and decide to continue on public transit all the way to my son's place in Burnaby via the Skytrain (with a layover at the Yaletown Brewpub in downtown Vancouver). Walked20211014_061336.jpg20211014_091818.jpg20211014_105055.jpg 20 km and 48m elevation gain.

Sunday. Blue skies. Bus to Ferryport, a look out at over there... in spite of current problems, ships are still coming and going. It is not a beautiful location, but nowhere is without its beauty. Anywhere this side of the daisies is gorgeous!
A lonely shoe. Why? The Seafarers' Centre. Such a comfort for crew from distant lands.

Such a pretty day. Shame I forgot the camera chip...

Where I walked: Monbahus, Le Lot-et-Garonne: Circuit No° 340 (16.6 kms)

To give an idea of the scenery, here is a video featuring a prominent landmark & viewpoint, the village and surrounding countryside.

...and an old post card showing how things were in 1910:

...and a blessing for passing pilgrims, too! A group of Estonian pilgrims and I had lunch at a Seafarer's centre not far from Tallinn, in 2017, such a friendly space. Also, back in the day, ie a very long time ago, my musical friends and I sometimes entertained Korean sailors arriving at the Mission in Wellington NZ. The most recent contact I've had with the Seafarers was along the Østerdalsleden in Norway - one day I met a pastor associated with a Seafarers centre in Spain! Well, how about that, Kirkie....

Autumnal yesterday - wind and rain and precious little visibility beyond 100m when up on the ridge - no-one else to be seen.
But occasional illuminated glimpses of civilisation far below made it all worthwhile...

Bank Holiday Monday. If I had only left a little earlier! I did catch some of the glorious light though... and I took a photo from behind the poor pilgrims heading towards the Jeanie Johnston, dream of future light and hope... they never seem to get there. I also took a photo of a very common little tree found in pots along by the river... I think if I read @dougnutnz's article again I might recognise it... a cordiline! Or not? Then, the moon in the blue sky, and finally a queue of people. Tourist looking people. So weird! What are they doing here? Queueing for breakfast outside a cafe, Lemon Jelly, which was boarded up last time I passed it. And home. To prepare a casserole, and make dough for half half bread... Good to be getting back to 'normal'.
