I understand municipales can’t be reserved.

Am I right in thinking donativos can’t be reserved in advance?

What about hostels described as ‘religious albergues’?

Some donativos can't be reserved; some can. On the Camino Portugues I know a donativo that is so popular you can generally only count on staying there if you reserve in advance. The same goes for "religious" albergues. While they often can't be reserved, it isn't even a guarantee. Even for municipal albergues, I've seen instances of them accepting reservations.

You really need to check each albergue individually to see if it accepts reservations.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Generally speaking - municipal and donativos cannot be reserved. There are always exceptions. And even of those who normally don't take reservations - have under some circumstances (i.e. last summer many did because of significantly decreased bed availability due to COVID). But best to check gronze.com for more info.

Safest to assume that unless it is a commercial operation, it won’t take reservations. There are exceptions, but not many. If in doubt, call.
