Xunta increases albergue capacity

As this article describes, the Xunta decided to increase permitted albergue capacity to 50% (up from 30%), no doubt because of big increases in pilgrim traffic.

Another development is that two albergues, one in Samos and the San Lázaro albergue on the edge of Santiago, will be devoted to quaranting pilgrims. Pilgrims who test positive on the Camino in Galicia will have their quarantine expenses covered by the government.

It would be very interesting to hear from a quarantined pilgrim who takes advantage of the government insurance.

The town of Portomarín already has a covid quarantine space, using its old albergue in the school for that purpose.

I know that a lot of forum members will have a strong opinion about this, but please keep the discussion to the facts.

Pasted in from another thread:

We will delete:
  1. Statements bordering on misinformation according to public health guidance.
  2. Opinion/comments for/against/about vaccines and variant transmissibility.
  3. Covid-focused opinion and rationalization of going or not going on the camino
  4. Other covid-related debates that have been thoroughly exhausted on the forum
We do think it’s important, for prospective and current walkers, to hear about what’s actually happening on the camino. But that kind of information seems like an opening for the spiral into the four topics noted above.

We know covid is going to be with us and the camino for a long time to come, but we simply cannot keep having these debates. PLEASE limit your posts to factual and pertinent information.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
Please note that the increase in capacity will be gradually, first a pilot of 8 albergues on the different routes here in Galicia and if that goes well the rest of the albergues.

I beg to differ...
The 8 albergues participate in a program which involves installing carbon dioxide monitors (which should finally stop people from closing the windows)
Capacity change to 50% is for all albergues in Galicia, private and public from today on
