Hello, just a quick note to all who are considering this route to confirm that the river crossing is no problem. The water is only about knee deep. We were advised by a local that the water was too deep to cross and that was probably true at the beginning of April following the rains but it is definitely no problem now.
 
Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

I have had contact with the Badajoz Jacobea association, as I crossed te river on May 9. They are building a bridge over the river, so here is their email response of May 10:
We hope that the work on the walkway will be completed soon. It has already been awarded to the company that is going to build it and they have a period of 4 months to complete it.
We will spread it in our social networks.
