As a solo walker from SJPP last June, I had no problem just turning up and finding a bed, and never considered booking. Its more of an issue for groups who perhaps may wish 4 beds together in smaller villages.
Hi,
I found it easiest to get the inexpensive evening bus to the airport and sleep the early hours away there.
The airport is very quiet and I had no problem getting a few hours of shut eye.
Only breafast sold out. Roncesvalles can accommodate a huge number of pilgrims in some style. Breakfast fortunately was availble within an hours walk. (and a good breakfast at that)
When you appear at Roncesvalles you are offered tickets for a bed, an evening meal and breakfast. On Saturday the take up was so great, that breakfast sold out mid afternoon. No criticism of Roncesvalles or staff. It is a wonderful place to spend an evening
Roncesvalles sold all their breakfast tickets before 3.00pm yesterday. That was back news for the many pilgrims taking it easy on the route from St Jean. it was windy and difficult with many arriving much later in the afternoon.
Hi, I'm travelling by train from the North of Scotland to St Jean next Wed.
An overnight stay in London, then an overnight in Paris means a total of 54hours between home and SJPP.

Might be worth a look if you have plenty...
Hi Leah,
Likewise, I'm planning on leaving SJPP on 29th April (having arrived by train from Scotland and having already walked from Lourdes to SJPP. Already packed and really now just fine tunning to get the lightest and most practical pack list possible. Already feeling the buzz. Maybe bump...

I'm hugely appreciative of all the comments re my initial question yesterday night. Loads to now mull over before planning an effective strategy. I'd much prefer to simply just get up and walk each day with no definite destination or target distance.
However with all your advice, I now have a...
Thanks Kirsty,
This is exactly the sort of info I was looking for. Yes, I'll take your advice and head off early. I take it mid week would be the quietest rope drop with weekends the busiest.
Hi Kirsty,
I'm hoping to avoid the "crowds" and any convoys of walkers for the first few days at least. I hear it gets pretty busy at peak departure times
