For me, the compostela was not especially important -- I value my credencial much more -- but I went to the office in Santiago because I wanted my name added to the long, long list of pilgrims who have walked the Camino.
I took a TGV train from Gare Montparnasse to Biarritz. I arrived there too late for a train to SJPP, so we used the Bourricot shuttle. They're very helpful, and they picked up some other pilgrims too, so we all shared the cost.
