    Camino de Madrid

I found Jeffrey Barrera’s guidebook to the Camino de Madrid helpful when I walked it in late September last year. Whatever it didn’t cover the forum filled in the blanks. When walking the Buen Camino app and Gronze were also useful. It’s a wonderful walk. I leave for the Lana this Saturday, but...

    Best route into Burgos

I did that section 17 months ago and the Buen Camino App worked like a charm for the river route. The early crossover on Avenida de la Constitucion Espanola only had 2 arrows pointing to the left and no real crosswalk and was missed by all the other pilgrims I saw. Just as well as it would be...

    Ordering beer in Spain

I agree about the Cana. My friends in Spain told me if you order the Cana it’s usually smaller but cheaper per ounce then the other beer sizes (like a happy hour discount) and so I usually order a Cana and then don’t fill guilty if I want an additional one. I’ve also taken to drinking the 0.0...

The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

I shut the water off to the house, any wash/dish machine etc or waterline could leak until you get back…

    Alsa Bus and luggage

I’ve always just loaded the app (Alsa) and you can buy your ticket that way contactless whenever you want. You just show the bar code which they scan.

Should I bring my own Mercado bag?

Plastic shopping bags from home(or bought there) work fine. I clip to my belt the Sea to Summit 20liter daypack and use it for groceries, it’s about the size of a golf ball. This bag doubles as my personal item on planes and trains and it’s a great backpack to have while sightseeing. Once when...

    Alsa Bus and luggage

Like the others said any large bags go underneath the bus, and keep valuables with you. You can wait until nearly departure to put your backpack underneath the bus, I usually wait until near the end to do that, then slide someone else’s bag over mine when I stow it underneath. That way it...

How far in advance book the accommodations

I’m walking April 21st for just the first 2 weeks until Cuenca and I was able to book everything for those 2 weeks. Only 1 place made me wait until I was 5 weeks out to confirm. When I started booking 6 months in advance a lot of places showed full, but when I looked at their availability...

Food to bring to Spanish friend from US

My friends in Madrid always want Ghirardelli chocolate 🍫 (I don’t know why, maybe a memorable trip to San Francisco?). It’s always hand delivered upon arrival, but I like your idea of mailing it from within Spain. Mailing them items from the US has always ended poorly.

    Backpacks Check-in or carry-on

I agree, usually my time in Madrid is short and I use it for getting a few supplies before I catch my train for my starting point. Since walking poles in Spain only cost $20-30 a set, I don’t mind buying them and donating them on my way out. Especially as it saves me time packaging them...

    Next after Camino Frances

I think he is going May/June so I put a start day mid May to June into Camino Weather App and the average looks enticing. See below.

    Next after Camino Frances

Ruta De Lana is 27-28 days depending on where you start and stop. After reading pilgrims accounts from Peregrina2000 and others it where I’m heading. I did the Madrid last fall and the Lana sounds similar: less crowded route with great scenery, and easy to get to and from. You also have the...

    Backpacks Check-in or carry-on

I’ve only once been required to check my backpack in all my trips to Spain (Lufthansa last year), but I put all the items I have to have on my trip in a dry bag in the top of my bag that I can remove , so if it gets lost replacing a backpack isn’t that difficult. All the rest of my gear would...

    Alicante to Orito

I did a little more research and the route below Fontcalent is mentioned below in the first Alicante-Orito stage in Caminosantiago.org under the link below. https://www.caminosantiago.org/cpperegrino/caminos/etapa.asp?kCamino=ES13a01a&EtapaId=545&CaminoId=9 Also the day before I walk it...

    Planning?

Some of the albergues were closing this last October earlier than posted. May have been a fluke but if you contact them a day ahead you’ll know who is open. Plenty of private accommodation with exception of only a couple of stages if you get in a jam. Buen Camino
