What is your most beautiful / favourite church on the CF?

Yes this was great and stay there if you can. Had one of our most spiritual stays there and a great communal dinner too.

What is your most beautiful / favourite church on the CF?

Have to say that the church on Nevarette was very beautiful. The golden backdrop behind the alter covered on golden bunches of grapes. Made all the more amazing by the fact we got to be in the procession of the Madonna. Also loved the simplicity of the Romanesk church in Torres del Rio.

Walking The Camino Without Training. Fool's Errand?

Hi Joe Like any such adventure getting in some training will be a good thing - but you don't have to. My wife and I were very overweight - I was 130kgs (280 pounds?) but over a 7 month period managed to lose around 25 kgs and that was just from eating right and exercise and this was all for...

Camino Day 1 From Sjdp. A Bit Scared !!!

Ha ha! You watched The Way - one thing I now know is that like any movie take it with a grain of salt as they change things to suit the situation! (Great film though - it also inspired my wife and I to do the Camino!) Day one is tough. But if you are of moderate fitness you can make it. as...

    Backpack on Trains

we did use these racks but always secured our packs together with a cable lock - so good luck tyrying to quickly make off with 30kgs ! We still always made sure they were secure though - or put them in the seat above us if we could

    A Question about Schengen Rules

Sometimes having a NZ passport is really nice! In 2015 my wife and I spend around 7 months in Europe including the Camino. While the rule for a NZ passport a Is similar to the US one there is a big hole. As NZ had treaties with the individual members of the Zone prior to the formation of...

    Fanny pack/Bum bag...

Have to agree - we bought a couple of great ones in Switzerland before our arrival - good space in them to put phone and guides, credentials etc. Was not water proof so anything of value was inside a ziplock bag. Ours also had a pocket for water bottle as well. Worn in the front with main...

    hiking poles--which kind

My wife and I bought a pair of Leki carbon poles - they did not have shock absorbers in them but we found that being made of carbon they did not seem to vibrate like the aluminium ones. We used the rubber feet in the end of the poles rather than the metal spikes which helped in that regard too...

    Old boots?

Hmm that is a tough one. I guess at 5 years old they are likely on the end of their life. Remember the outside and sole may look ok but the cushioning inside has taken 5 years of pounding so wont be up to long punishment - especially f you are talking 20-25km a day. Also consider that the...

    Solar chargers

I took one when we walked - a Goal Zero 7 which worked well - but in the end I rarely used it as there was pretty much always somewhere to plug a phone into. What I would recommend is a multi charger - we got one we called the Octopus - even though it only has 3 cables. Allowed you to plug it...

    CF - current budget

My wife and I walked the Camino Sept/Oct 2015. The best budget was around 25-30EUR a day each. Albergues are $5-10euro on average a night. Even those with a donation we always paid the going rate especially if there was food as well. Breakfast 2.50-4 Euro Second breakfast (lol) normally 3eur...

What's the Camino routine - 1st time on pilgrimage

Our routine tended to be to get to where we wanted to go - or where we wanted to stop. Find an albergue - often we had an idea which one from the guidebook and the reviews etc. Check in, get set up, have a shower and get changed. Check out the facilities - is it OK for cooking? If not find a...

    cell phone on camino frances

My S4 unfortunately died 2 days into the camino and I didn't get a cgance to buy a new one a week later. I tell you it was quite a experience buying a cell phone from a shop where no one spoke English! If you just want a SIM I would suggest Movistar who have some good deals. Also there are a...

St Jean to Roncesvalles in a day, or stop at Orisson?

You may have left it a little late to get a bed at Orisson now and they are notoriously bad at not responding to emails! My wife and I did it in September last year and like you were very nervous about doing the whole day to Roncesvalles. We could not get accommodation at Orisson but could get...
