Not really, I did not carry one and found my way just by ask other pilgrims what was the next stage and I always looked for the "albergue municipal" didn't have a need for the guide book, not carrying one gave me a real sense of adventure and being spontaneous, once I landed in Madrid my camino...
Nothing to be concerned regarding safety, the route is basically an uphill road walk with breathtaking views, not a technical hike, bring plenty of water and sunscreen, you will enjoy it. At no time I felt like I should not be there because it was unsafe. Just go for it. Buen Camino.
I don't like hats, I wore the shemagh when the sun got too hot for comfort/safety, other times just kept it as a wet neck wrap to keep me cool, works better than a hat
Both, you can also try sunscreen and a shemagh, the shemaghs has been use for millenniums as protection for the head, face, and neck in very harsh/inhospitable environments, you can find more information in Youtube and buy one in Amazon, a premiere one is about $20.00 but they go as low as $10...
I just did El Camino Frances this month and getting Albergues is no issue, there are plenty of beds, keep in mind that although the municipals are the first to fill up there are many more options around, I only had a "problem" in Puente de la Reina where the municipal had only one bed left and I...
Few weeks ago I left St. Jean at around 7:30 and got to Roncesvalles at around 4:30 with resting stops because I was in good shape and still felt the "pain of the uphill way" no complaints just sharing my experience
I suggest you stay in St. Jean overnight or make a reservation in Horizonte (near half way) because crossing the Pyrinees is a beatiful but challenging endeavor, bring plenty of water because there is none after Horizonte until you get to the border with Spain, make sure you drink 1 full litter...
You can easily get a train from Madrid (I did it at the Atocha Station) to Pamplona, I just did it, about 60 Euros only 2 hours +-, once in Pamplona walk out the train station to the bus stop right out the door and take bus #9 (ask the driver to make sure) 2 Euros to the bus station if you are...
Update to this post, just came back from El Camino, awesome experience, I am a retired soldier and did my camito in a minimalistic way, the shemagh or kaffiyah is a must have for those who prefer to experience it in a true minimalistic back to basics way, you understand why the shemagh/kaffiyah...
Respectable point, just keep in mind that other countries look at being naked in a different way. Once I was in a lake in Switzerland an a lady just got naked, went for a swim, got out, got dress, and left. None of the locals gave her a second look, even those with kids. My point is that is...
Greetings, I will be walking EL Camino Frances starting June 6, 2016. I am not sure on what to pack for inclement weather, I don't want to overpack. I have a good gore tex hardshell jacket for rain/wind breaker; do I need more layers of clothing? How cold can it get at the Pyrinees? Thank you,
