I do the same, it is certainly not expected but often welcomed. It is unlikely you will ever see locals doing it (not that is a negative per se) as it is not expected by the bar owners.

I'm looking at the app now, and it's easy to see which albergues are participating. There is a green band (many beds available) a yellow band (a few beds available) or a red band (FULL). It also shows what the situation was the previous day.
