Hello Lovelyshell,
My sons and I landed in Porto around 2:00 pm a couple of years ago. We filled our water bottles in the airport (which is north of Porto), strapped on the backpacks and found the camino within a couple of kilometers of the airport. We walked to Vilarinho and stayed at...
Here is what I do that has helped me. Whether I'm starting in Pamplona, Porto, San Sebastian, or Oviedo...it seems that each airplane gets in around noon-1:00pm local. Flight from Charlotte usually gets into Madrid around 7 AM, then catch another flight to wherever I'm going to start. If I...
Stinky Pilgrim,
Here's mine. Followed my first Camino up by trying my second one solo and tried the Camino Norte. I didn't train near as hard as I should have. I was 53 at the time. The Norte is not near as crowded as the Frances and everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) was a faster walker than...
Cathy78,
My wife and I are also going to try and do the coastal route in May. It'll be my 5th and her 2nd. Maybe we'll see you along the Way. Just a suggestion if you're wanting to get to walking. Since Porto airport is so far to the North and most planes from Madrid (if you're going that...
Hello Bob,
Let me throw in my advice. Right after Borres the route splits. My son and I stayed at a great albergue right near the split. Communal dinner. Breakfast. The next day we made it to Berducedo. Still no problems for me (55 yo) or my son (32 yo). However the NEXT stage is where...
I really enjoyed stopping and staying at midpoint villages instead of where the guidebooks say you should stay. Smaller crowds and more intimate dwellings...many having communal dinners.
I've done 3 now. Porto to SDC easiest but beautiful, Frances next...about 4 tough stages amongst the 30 days then the Camino Norte....toughest first week I've ever experienced. As far as boredom difficulty goes....i've heard from other pilgrims Via del la Plato is monotonous.
Hey Steven, my thoughts are a bit skewed. I agree with what most are telling you, go there before or after your Camino. You might enjoy it more. I was in total solitude for like 8 or 9 days on Camino Norte, when I arrived in Bilbao. After eating lunch across the river from the Guggenheim, the...
One more thing...You can strap your pack on at the Porto Airport and find the route fairly easy. Since we got in around noon, and that the airport is on the north side of town, we immediately took off walking to Vilarinho.
I just accomplished that route last summer. I did do the interior (traditional) route. Only one day really put a strain on my 55 YO body. Can't remember if it had to do with the hills or the distance (or maybe a combo of both). Good luck.
Yes Brian, I too had a moment on both the Norte (2016) and Portuguese (2017) that had me asking that exact question. Somehow made it through, the arrival at an Albergue when other pilgrims welcome you gave me the renewed strength to carry on. There's a stage on the Norte that terrain difficulty...
Wow Denise, I plan on flying into San Sebastian around that time (a couple days after father's day). I will be by myself for this Camino. I hope I run into you. Buen Camino.....Tom
Hello Pilgrims,
My name is Tom and am training to do my second Camino this summer. I'm torn between two routes and looking for advice. I loved the whole experience but if I had to come up with my favorite part, it would be the evenings getting to meet and know the other pilgrims. Having said...
