    25 km per day?

Make you awn arrangements. When my wife (not a strong walker) and I waked the Camino Frances in 2009 we took 50 days. The best thing I have ever done. We had 3 'rest' days - in Burgos and Leon (sightseeing) and Ponferrada (illness). <10 kms/day 3 days, 10-20 kms/day 27 days, >20 kms/day 17...

Nicknaming the People You Walk With

We referred a woman as Clonker because at Manilla de las Mulas albergue (where boots were to be left outside the dormitory) she kept them on while walking (clonking) from the door to her bunk, to the bathroom, to her bunk, and repeat late at night. In Santiago de Compostela we met her at dinner...

John Brierley is seriously ill - an invitation to send messages of thanks and support.

My best wishes to John Brierley to regain his health. I had the pleasure to meet John when he was in Australia (Sydney and Blackheath) a few years ago. We used his guidebook for the Camino Frances in 2009. The picture is me on the left and John Brierley on the right.

5th September - Cycling Vuelta finishing in Santiago de Compostela

In Sydney, Australia on SBS television I just watched the highlights of the final time trial stage from Padron to SdeC. Saw the cathedral a few times in the background. The main doors seemed closed and no people milling around. I hope a door (perhaps the Holy Door) was open so people could...

    The In-Between Places

Maybe we were ahead of the game. In 2009 my wife and I (she not a strong walker) took 50 days for the Camino Francis from St Jean Pied de Port. On 3 occasions we only walked 5 kms for the day. From Trinadad de Arre (to stay in the Basilica de Arre convent) to Pamplona - then from Pamplona to...

1 April 2009 - My wife Elizabeth and I walked from St Jean Pied de Port to Valcarlos. The start of the best adventure ever.

    Camino Tiles

My Camino tile arrived unbroken recently. It will be a Christmas present for my middle daughter who walked the Camino Frances in 2002. That became the inspiration for my wife and I to walk that in 2009.

Your All Time, Absolute BEST Camino Moment!

A late entry. Some of our best moments were on the Camino Frances in 2009 with the Easter Parades. On Palm Sunday we were in Pamplona when along came the procession towards the cathedral. The locals 'pulled' us into the procession and gave us palm leaves to wave. Shortly afterwards we were all...

Hurray! Milestone reached! 10 000 kilometers on Caminos de Santiago.

As someone else said "Nice start" ! It gives a good interpretation of 'within walking distance' ! Well done.

I would suggest you find a drawing like the avatar of Rex (above). I really like that style.

What was you best moment (apart from walking)?

In 2011 my wife, Elizabeth, and I walked the Camino Podiensis. On 1 May at the end of the day as we were walking up the main street of Estaing we heard the call of 'Hey John' then 'Hey Elizabeth'. We looked about and saw Bernard Itier (French) with whom on 23 April we had shared a room in St...

What was the biggest surprise of your Camino?

It's easier if you descend from a 'famous' family. I'm a 3 * great grandson of the Explorer Gregory Blaxland (who was the first European to cross the Blue Mountains in NSW). The other woman descends the same number of generations from his brother Christopher.

What was the biggest surprise of your Camino?

Not precisely correct. For example: if two people (A and B) are 5th cousins (to each other) then a child of person A is a 5th cousin once removed of person B (and vice versa). If your hear of two people saying they are 5th cousins once removed (to each other) you can't tell intuitively which...

What was the biggest surprise of your Camino?

Siblings have common parents 1st cousins have common grandparents 2nd cousins have common great grand-parents etc

What was the biggest surprise of your Camino?

My biggest surprise happened after the Camino. During our Camino in 2011 from Le Puy to St Jean Pied de Port we overlapped for a bit with a couple from England. In 2012 we went to the UK to walk the Coast to Coast path and after that we stayed with them for a few days. During conversation...

    How many km for albergue?

In 2009 we stayed 2 nights in 3 different albergues. In Burgos at Santiago y Santa Catalina we had to pack up our things, leave the albergue but could leave them there - then check-in again at Noon. At Leon we stayed at the Convento Santa Maria. The first night we were Pilgrims (donativo)...
