Favorite podcasts en español?

Prentiss Riddle

For those of us who enjoy listening to conversation or music in Spanish, either while walking or in preparation for our trip, what are some good podcasts to get the language in our ears?

I’m interested in any genre of content, level or variety of Spanish, and even in the ones that have music in Spanish and announcements in English or vice versa.

I’ll start. I’m mostly familiar with pocasts produced in the US in Latin American varieties of the language.

Radio Ambulante from NPR is a latino answer to the “This American Life” storytelling aesthetic. Generally at an advanced level but good practice even if I can’t follow it all.

Alt.Latino is another NPR program that showcases the enormous diversity of latin-influenced pop music from throughout the Americas and Spain. Announced in English but largely sung in Spanish, sometimes in English or Portuguese. Easy to advanced.

Conversely, Club de Jazz is announced in castellano but features jazz music and interviews that are mostly with English-speaking artists, but the hosts provide Spanish translations. The show is based in Pamplona so you’ll hear plenty of the good Spanish /θ/! Intermediate.

¿Qué más?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Because everyone has different tastes and interests I hesitate to recommend specific programs, but there is a huge selection of podcasts available on the site of Radio Nacional de España:

Listening to Spanish talk radio programs is a great way to polish one's listening comprehension skills.

My Spanish is in that intermediate limbo zone - podcasts for learners bore me, but podcasts for native speakers are often too difficult.

I found two that I liked that were challenging, but that I could usually follow:

Documentos - hour-long documentaries from Radio Nacional de España (RNE) that mostly covers history. Similar in style to BBC's In Our Time.

Nómadas - Shorter travel documentaries, also from RNE. It's nice because the hosts speak European Spanish, but their guests come from all over the Hispanosphere. I found these easier than to understand than Documentos.

I found both on iTunes.
