I've just got back from a trip to Jerez and in the airport on the way back what should I see along with all the top Riojas and Sherries but a bottle of Irache Crianza 2001. I had to buy it.

At 3.50 euro it was the cheapest thing by far and my memories of the wine fountain are not of great wine. My dilemna is whether to leave it on the shelf as a souvenir or wow my friends with this spicey number.

Same dilemma here, William. Almost a year since I finished my first (and only?) Camino and bottles of Real Irache Gran Reserva 1996 and Irache Reserva 1999 are still in my 'cellar', waiting for the occasion to present itself. Bought in Bilbao airport for more than 10 euros each, I expect these to be better (?) than your Crianza 2005.

Like you I didn't find the free wine in the fountain too great. Perhaps the ones in the bottles are.

My two halpennys worth on Irache !

My memories of Irache are arriving at 9:00am and enjoying a cool glass of wine and refilling my water bottle from the fountains.

Wine is an unusual drink in that the taste of the wine can vary depending on the occasion , the ambience , the quality of the glass and the company, to name but a few factors.

Bodega Irache should be commended for the effort they make in providing this service free of charge to all passers by. I would certainly never expect them to give away their best wines for free.

Well... I bought the Gran Reserva a couple of years ago to make up for the fact that the fountain wasn't on when I got to it... Now, I know my wines quite well, having worked in the wine trade for a few years and I've gotta say... It was horrible! Keep it as a door stop or paperweight!

Okay, Minkey, I'll take your word. The two bottles in my shelf will remain where they are. Not as a doorstop though! More like a Camino trophy, for bragging rights. ;-)
