Yesterday the trek from the wonderful albergue in Guemes to Santander seemed to be a bit too short so we continued on to Santa Cruz. Apparently many of the 20+ peregrinos that stayed in Guemes did too. By the time we reached Santa Cruz, there were no beds at the Albergue Santa Cruz at 5p. (Many of us agree that the trek from Santander to Santa Cruz is definitely longer than what is written in Ciccones guidebook - the dreary locale doesn't make it any faster either)

So as it is said, the Camino provides. The sweet innkeeper suggested we take the train into Boo de Pielagos - a 6 minute ride, saving walking another 6-8km - and try the albergue by the station. I called ahead to verify two beds would be available and she put our name on them. Upon arriving at Albergue Piedad - literally steps from the station - we were greeted by Janet who graciously took us in, showed us the large rooms with FRESH COTTON LINENS & a stash of fresh cotton towels and welcomed us.

What a surprise. This albergue is definitely my favorite so far. It is a luxury to have good mattresses & pillows and have linens supplied. There was a washing machine to wash everything and Janet took our clothing to dry since it would likely not dry in time on a line. We met an entirely different crew here that we had not yet met and enjoyed the new & spacious accommodations. And a small grocer and carneceria a short distance from the front door!

I highly recommend this gem of an albergue along the northern Camino!!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Another great blog on the Norte!
Buen Camino to you both.
