Obtaining a passport in Tomar

We thought that since Tomar was a pretty significant point on the Camino Portugues that we would pick up our passports and start from here. However, after spending sometime searching and asking around there appears to be no passports in Tomar. We checked with the campground, hostel, tourist information offices, and the Convento de Cristo.

Any suggestions? Should we just get our stamps on a clean sheet of paper and hope we can pick up a passport in Coimbra? Does anyone know of another place locally that may have the passports?

I trust that you are now in the Tomar area searching for a Credential. The next SURE place to get one would be at the cathedral in Porto. As you suggest make your own for now citing your full name and the method by which you are traveling. Have this stamped and dated each day.

Perhaps you might call these Amigos for assistance.

BCRockies - We are in Tomar now.


Margaret - Yes we are here now and thank you for the info. We are traveling around the world on our bikes and this is going to be part of our journey. Initially, we planned on starting in Lisbon, but decided to skip the big city and pick up the route in Tomar, thinking Tomar would be a great place to start and to obtain our Credential. We spoke with a lady in town and she told us that she got hers from the Convento de Cristo and that they should have some. She is also friends with the director at the Convento and suggested that we contact her, so we sent her an email and are waiting to hear back. If they are out, then we'll just make our own for now and check each place that we pass until we pick up the real one.

Update - You can get your Credential at the Convento de Cristo. We spoke with another lady today after our visit and at first she did not understand what we were looking for, but we mentioned the director's name (Anna) and she knew immediately what we needed. The cost is 1.50 Euro and they are located in a binder on the desk on the left, behind the counter at the exit.

If you are visiting Tomar, the Convento de Cristo is a must see. Normally the price is 6 Euro, but on Sunday's it is free to enter. Plan on a couple hours because it is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. It's truly an amazing place to see and a great way to start your journey.

Thanks for your update on how to get a Credential in Tomar at the Convento de Cristo; other pilgrims will find this most helpful. I agree that the convent is QUITE an extraordinary structure. Don't miss the Roman ruins at Condeixa la Velha as you bike north towards the old university town of Coimbra.
