I recently learned that the Archdiocese of Burgos is contimplating closing the Albergue de Peregrinos EMAUS in Burgos. This will a real shame as it is a wonderful respite for pilgrims to stop and find a warm Christian welcome, a communal meal, and a place where they can relax to regain strength, both spiritually and physically so they can continue their Camino to Santiago de Compostela.

I hate the thought that this religious sanctuary will be taken from the pilgrims. I encourage you to write to the Archbishop of Burgos, the most reverend Mario Iceta Gavicagogeascoa and ask him not to close Emaus. This is his email secretario.arzobispo@archiburgos.es. Maybe if he hears from enough of us he will make the right decision.

I stayed at the Emaus albergue in September 2023. It was a wonderful pilgrim experience full of fellowship and prayer.

What’s the reason for the closure?

I’m not quite sure. The former priest was recently reassigned to a new parish in Burgos and his assistant who helped establish the albergue decided it was time for her to retire. As I understand it originally some Franciscan Friars were going with take over the albergue, however the Archdiocese had different ideas and are thinking of using the space as a student dormitory. No final decision has been made but its closure seems eminent. The albergue was never a money maker but is did pay it's way.

I wrote to the Bishop of Burgos about Emaus and I received the following reply:

"El arzobispo de Burgos agradece su amable correo y le comunica que, también para nosotros sería estupendo tener el albergue abierto. Pero dificultades económicas serias de la parroquia no nos permiten, a día de hoy, asegurar la apertura del albergue." // The Archbishop of Burgos thanks you for your kind email and informs you that it would be great for us to have the hostel open. But serious economic difficulties of the parish do not allow us, today, to ensure the opening of the hostel.

That’s a real shame because it was probably one of my favorite Albergues on the entire Camino! The peaceful prayerful atmosphere was such a needed respite from the walking.
